associate degree and transfer

so i was wondering if associate will help me get into UC or CSU
well, im not able to graduate from CC due to 1 class missing
so my question is really "is it going to hurt if i dont graduate from CC/get an Ass. degree?"
i know this may be wrong section but let me know if it will affect me getting into both UC and CSU. thank you!

No, having an Associates doesn’t help or hurt your admission to a UC/CSU.

@jdom24
thank you very much :)

Like everyone else said, it won’t help or hurt you. I’m just getting my AA before transferring because I already have the required classes done. I also dropped out of high school so it’ll be nice to get to participate in my first graduation ceremony. :p

Even though it won’t aid in your transfer prospects, it’s not a bad idea to get the AA. According to the latest (2009) report from the National Center for Education Statistics (nces.ed.gov), the median income for those with AA degrees was $6K more than for those with only a high school education.

Fast Facts: Income of young adults (77);

Sometimes life throws curve balls. You might not be able to complete the 4 year degree due to unforeseen circumstances (prolonged illness, infirmity, etc.) If this happens (and I know a few transfers who have fallen into this category) you will only be able to claim ‘some college’ on job applications, etc. This would put you in the same boat as someone who took 1 course at CC and then dropped.

If you’ve already completed/will complete the requirements for an AA degree before you transfer, I would suggest officially petitioning for it. However, if it would mean unduly prolonging your time at cc, I would simply take the transfer.

It depends.
Some states, like CA, don’t give priority to AS or AA recipients;
however,other states, like FL, NY(CUNY and SUNY system), they give special consideration to AS or AA recipients. An AA student with 3.0 gpa may beat a Non-AA student with 3.8 GPA…

It might make more sense to NOT get the AA/AS degree now if your CC will allow you to use your bachelor’s degree to clear the GE requirements after the fact. This way, you never have to take the one or two GE classes, speech class, or PE class you’re missing.

I agree with calbear to petition for the degree if you have all the classes. But don’t waste your time taking an extra class or two.

If you don’t end up getting your BA, just take a class or two to get that AA/AS. There is a small risk that the GE or major requirements will change by waiting.
