I have to decide between Barrett, the honors college at ASU and the University of Washington honors college.
Both are roughly the same in terms of cost (I’m a WA state resident and qualify for a $58,000 scholarship from asu) so that isn’t really a factor. Also, I don’t really get homesick so the fact that ASU is a bit far from home doesn’t really matter.
So, considering that I’m going into a mathematics/economics major (hoping to someday work in data analytics at a startup), which option would be best for me?
Thanks in advance and any advice would be very helpful.
She’s just added SMU to the mix. They offered a surprisingly large sum of scholarship money, making their tuition almost a push with ASU Barrett. Alabama is still in play, but more of a distant 3rd or 4th at the moment. Official SMU tour is later this month, so we’ll see.
We paid the enrollment deposit at ASU today, so here we go. Barrett Honors College and Leaders Academy at the W.P. School of Business. Forks up, I guess!
@MYOS1634, she liked everything about SMU with the exception of its smaller size, but at the end of the day she felt more “at home” at ASU, could really see herself succeeding there, liked the perks of essentially being double honors at Barrett and WP Carey, and wanted to go further than 30 miles from home. Unless it were Barrett combined with either business or engineering, I would not have allowed her to go to ASU truth be told.
I’m learning that Barrrett, coupled with engineering, can be too burdensome and may not be necessary…and is very difficult for engineers to maintain the 3.25 GPA required to stay enrolled.
Going through a similar decision process as well. Thoughts and opinions appreciated.

Yikes! Yes. I’ve seen good eng’g students struggle to stay above 3.0 at many schools.
Just something to be aware of re: ASU - between full time and part time students, there are 51,984 undegrads according to the 2015-2016 Common Data Set that they have posted on their website.
In terms of degrees conferred (according to that same CDS), Business/marketing majors comprised 22.5% of all bachelor’s degrees given in that school year… All of the others are <10% each.
Also, MOST of the business majors are on the Tempe campus, but not all of them are. If your student will be taking classes at 1 of the other campuses (for example, Polytechnic or West campuses), then he/she will need a car. https://wpcarey.asu.edu/undergraduate-degrees/programs
Look at the housing costs for ASU Barrett. There is an extra fee of about $1,000 for Barrett Honors, and students have to live in Barrett housing for first two years I think. The room/board was like $13,000 I believe.
At Alabama there might be cheaper freshman housing options, and after first year students can move off campus and are not required to purchase a meal plan I think.
