ASU Question?

Hello,
I am wondering how likely it is that I will be accepted into ASU.
Current overall GPA: 2.99
ACT: 21
AZ resident

According to ASU admission website you need the following:
ASU welcomes applications from students with diverse academic backgrounds and interests. Freshman applicants who possess a high school diploma and meet the following requirements will be admitted to ASU.
English - 4 years (composition/literature based)
Math - 4 years (algebra I, geometry, algebra II and one course requiring algebra II as a prerequisite)
Laboratory Science - 3 years total (1 year each from any of the following areas are accepted: biology, chemistry, earth science, integrated sciences and physics)
Social Science - 2 years (including 1 year American history)
Second Language - 2 years (same language)
Fine Arts or Career and Technical Education - 1 year

Applicants must also meet at least one of the following:
Top 25% in high school graduating class
3.00 GPA in competency courses (4.00 = “A”)
ACT 22 (24 nonresidents)*

I am seriously right on the edge for both the ACT and gpa. Unfortunately, my HS does not do class rank. I am aware ASU has a high acceptance rate, but I still do not meet the needed requirements. Thank you.

ASU isn’t usually too picky, but being borderline on their minima will lower your chances. Maybe 30%?

Not very likely. You have lower stats than you need which hurts, but not over. 40-50% chance. I’ve seen worse stats get in. Apply early and you have a shot, also extracurricular activities will raise your chances for specific major. Take a community college course to show you’re serious if you can.

Is it better to take the ACT again to get that 22 and then use rolling admission or just go ahead and submit my app. now and take advantage of being earlier than other applicants?

If they will accept the Feb ACT absolutely sign up and take it. Do some more prep and practice tests and get your 22+. This is an absolute no brainer!

Those ASU requirements are for guaranteed admission but I get the impression a lot of students are admitted through a review process even if they don’t meet one of the minimums stated. I do agree with others here that retaking the ACT is a good idea. ASU 25th percentile score for enrolled freshman for Fall 2015 was 23.

Also, be aware that the 3.0 is for “competency classes”. Is the 2.99 you list strictly based on the listed competency classes? If it includes other electives with higher grades, you would be farther off than 0.01 points.

Another option is to attend MCC for a year or so and apply as a transfer student. It will also be much less expensive and you get basic requirement courses out of the way. If you attend CC and kick ass with good grades, not only is it less expensive but there are scholarships to ASU for outstanding CC transfer students. A chance to re-set your academic credentials and lower the cost of education with the same awesome degree from ASU.
