It’s late to apply, but my National Merit finalist son is not getting the financial assistance packages he needs from schools he has applied to on the east coast. We are interested in ASU Barret Honors, or UA Honors. Both ASU and UA offer substantial NM scholarships, but a decision has to be made soon. Son is not athletic, but is outgoing, intellectual and has sort of “alternative” interests (Shakespearean theatre on the side, but wants to major in poli sci/econ) Both schools look much more traditional that some of the others he has considered–any thoughts as to which school might fit best?

D was a May 05 Barrett's grad..non traditional.Look up my other threads about her experiences at ASU or PM me! Your S can probably do very well there, its a diverse group n the Honors College and big enough for everyone to find a "niche". Isn't it too late to apply though?I hope not for your sake...Good Luck!
PS we're from the east coast and Phoenix is a fine place..very cosmopolitan and the desert is quite beautiful.ASU is quite convenient to the airport for transportation..literally 5 minutes away!

I am a recent ASU graduate and I would definitely put in a good word for the honors college there. There are definitely some more alternative groups. As the other poster said, it's such a huge school everyone can find their niche. That does get intimidating sometimes so I'd definitely recommend joining a club (there are hundreds). If he likes working with kids Camp Sparky, is a great group with people who do social activities as well as volunteer with 5th graders. I had the same scholarship and it was wonderful not to have to pay for classes, and the weather is soooo nice. I don't know much about U of A but I'm sure it's fine too. Hope my info helped. Let me know if you need more! I'd be happy to make recommendations.

Also, I believe ASU does rolling admission which means there aren't any hard fast deadlines, excepting some scholarships. That's how it was 4 years ago anyway.

When I asked at Barrett, they said it wasn't too late & I just had my son's school send his transcript this month. He's also a NMF & hasn't decided either. The best offer he's gotten from other schools is 1/2 tuition + $2000 that still makes us have to come up with about $30,000/year. We're still mulling it all over, but I find Barrett every attractive from all I've read & heard.

Thanks for your comments. I e-mailed the dean of Barrett and received a nice reply, encouraging my son to visit the campus and apply. So...they are still accepting applications. We are still waiting for decisions/aid packages from a couple of the east coast colleges and it's nice to know he has an option at ASU.
