Athlete; What chances do I have?...OOS

Hello! This is my top school right now and I just want to know if it’s worth applying because I want to be realistic… Im a wrestler from NH and I’m an All state champ. Since I devoted most of high school in accomplishing that goal, I don’t have many extracurriculars. Can some just let me know where I stand? I know my SAT is a bit low…

Are you a recruited wrestler (or is that a possibility)? What year are you in high school? Have you taken the ACT? I’m afraid that I’m not familiar with SAT II – is this the new SAT based on a 1600 score?

I’m not being recruited at this school, I’m not sure if the team isn’t recruiting my weight but I would still walk on if I got accepted. I am at other division 1 programs like Bucknell. I haven’t taken the ACT , the new test is out of 1600 and I am a senior

You should look at the other threads on CC for athletes generally and wrestlers specifically to get an idea how much recruitment bumps up your chances. Your GPA is actually pretty good but the SAT isn’t competitive for UNC-CH as an OOS without help. (Please note: The new SAT that you took isn’t the same thing as the SAT II, which is the term used for SAT subject tests.) Bucknell is a great school but really different from UNC. What is it about UNC that you like so much?

Although being a URM and a first-generation college student might work to your benefit, I agree with Oregon2016 that your score on the new SAT is not competitive for UNC. You might think about taking the ACT; a friend who runs a test preparation service tells me that usually students do better on either the ACT or the SAT, so perhaps the SAT is not your test. And while it is too late to take the ACT before UNC’s EA application of October 15, if you get a decent ACT score you can apply to UNC by the RD deadline of January 15; and with a good ACT score, you can position yourself a little better in that pool of applicants.

I would take the time to talk to your school’s guidance counselor to discuss an application strategy for UNC; you might get some helpful ideas there.

Thank you Oregon2016 for your honest opinion and tips. To answer you’re question, I like UNC because they have an excellent need based finincial aid and I’m paying for college 100% by myself.

Thank you Gandalf78

I have to say that I think of Iowa for wrestling because of the writer John Irving. Also Lehigh. I agree with @gandalf78 about the ACT but I would imagine that it is possible that the schools recruiting you are putting pressure to apply ED I or II so you don’t have time.

I’ll toss out one last thought – and if you have already done this, please disregard. You state that you are not being recruited by UNC for its wrestling team; is there any chance that you could have your current high school wrestling coach contact the UNC wrestling coach directly and ask him to take a look at you? I presume that you have video of yourself, which your coach could provide. Just a thought; if you could add D-1 recruited athlete to your other hooks, then all the better.

@Oregon2016 I’ve decided on applying ED at Bucknell, its good school and I liked the campus. I’ll still be applying to UNC for the regular decision round too. Yes, Iowa and Lehigh are excellent wrestling program.

@gandalf78 I did try to contact the coach a number of times but he wouldn’t reply so I’m just assuming he isn’t interested in my weight.

Sorry for the late reply guys, I’ve been really busy lately and haven’t had time. I appreciate the advise.
