Athletic exemption at Lawrenceville?

I was told that recently Lawrenceville started letting serious athletes to opt out of sports requirements for one trimester a year. Does anyone have any experience with that?

From conversations with families with serious athletes in individual sports (squash, fencing, tennis etc), sounds like Lawrenceville in general is not very supportive of athletes who are committed to one sport at a high level and who needs to train and compete outside of the school all year long. Is the school trying to soften up on this with the exemption policy?

Anyone want to share his/her experience in this regard? Thanks a lot.

Yeah, my friend got an exemption for fencing in the fall term.

I don’t know what you mean by our not being very supportive of athletes who are committed to one sport at a high level though.

I heard that they frown on your need to skip certain activities or Sat classes to train or compete outside of school. Does your friend need to train/compete regularly all year long? I heard they don’t like that very much.

I have classmates who skip Sat classes all the time (okay, maybe not all the time, but it happens once in a while), to go on hockey/wrestling tournaments and the teachers don’t seem to have problems with it.

If you’re reasonably good, they will give you the exemption. Said friend is a soph and he/she is only a backup for the Varsity fencing team, but he/she still got the exemption in the fall term.

This policy is essentially new so I suspect the attitudes are and will continue to be evolving. I am aware of two fencers, through discussions with my child, that routinely missed classes last year. My child has an exemption for this upcoming fall (as do several teammates) and will likely miss several weeks of Saturday classes (although the Saturday schedule is quite light).

Thanks for the update. Do you know whether Lawrenceville is going lighter on Sat classes going forward? Most boarding schools are going in that direction.

Ugh I really hope we are going lighter on SAT classes. I do know that the school is considering this, but there’s probably not gonna be action in a few years.
