Athletic Fees

I am thinking of transferring next year but cost is a big issue for me. I’ve been reading about how high the athletic fees are at UCD. Apparently $20 million or $1,700/ student are paid by way of student fees. Apparently this is one of the highest in the country and more than double UCLA or Berkeley. Has there been some discussion on campus about reducing these fees? I am not really into following sports, so have they considered dropping down to Division 2? The basketball team has been either last or second to last place for like the past five years. The football team hasn’t done much better. Is the cost justified? By comparison, we only pay a few hundred bucks per student at CSULB. Just wondering.

I have read about the OVERALL fees being higher at Davis than any other UC. Davis is building up their Div. 1 athletics, so I guess that has something to do with the higher athletic fees, but I don’t know. I know that my son said he wanted to go to a school with a football team or at least a school with some school spirit. It seems there is a price to pay for this. Hopefully, the program will continue to grow and it will become a source of income from ticket sales, merchandise, etc.

I am a mom who will be paying these fees, so I know I don’t want them to increase, but I think fees are the back door way to raise money without raising the tuition. Is it justified? Usually this is a personal feeling depending on what is important or not in the eyes of the beholder.

$1,700 a year per student sounds pretty steep to me, especially since UCD is not really recognized for their football or basketball programs. The fact that not many students are commenting is probably a sign of apathy to this particular issue. it’s just another fee that gets overlooked with students just concentrating on paying their way and trying to graduate on time. Here at Cal Poly Pomona, I think we only pay something like $30 a year on athletics, but we’re in division 2. That’s just fine by me.

That’s $8,500 over the five years it takes to graduate. Why not have everyone to that much worth of volunteer work upon graduation? That’s a better way to spread the Davis brand and increase prestige for the university. Just a thought.

Solution: Don’t go to UCD.
