Check the NCAA rules for such visits just to make sure there are no accidental mess ups.

Good points vulture & hikids. We went thru this journey last year with daughter. Remember the coach is busy with recruiting other potentials, as well. Communication can get sketchy, with busy schedules, sport in season, and now holiday/spring break. Good luck q1spa.

Thanks for your replies. To answer earlier poster's question, it isn't an issue of potential recruiting violation - everything by the book. He is still communicating once per week with the other schools recruiting him. Yes, it is a busy time for them with meets every week. But we are just looking for a quick email or phone call:) In the long run, things will work out whether it is this school or another - his other possible choices are good also.

Figured I'd let you know what happened. The coach finally did call. He was out sick for quite awhile and apologized for delay (thats his story:)). Still wants son to come and be on team and that he definitely has roster spot, possibly small scholarship (~books) but not sure on that yet. So now its a matter of picking one out of final 3 -- this school which is OOS public fairly highly ranked (recruited walkon or small schol), instate public lower ranked overall but strong in desired major (walkon), and small private ranked fairly well both overall and in desired major (small athletic scholarship). Top choice is the OOS public for several reasons - possible downside is this one is competitive for major and you don't apply til end of soph year so there is risk. The other two he is already accepted in chosen major as freshman - but risk there is that he ends up not liking chosen major, in which the OOS higher ranked public could have better options. Another piece going thru his head is the "prestige" of an athletic scholarship, even though it is relatively small and won't impact financial piece of decision - tried to emphasize that this prestige will be short lived and nobody will care once he is at college whether he is getting small athletic scholarship or walkon. Tough decision since he could be happy at all 3.

q1spa - I'm still learning the terminology; can you explain what is a "recruited walkon"? Thanks!

A recruited walk on is an athlete the coach has identified as a desirable addition, but with no offer of scholarship. The coach may put a good word in at admissions on the "recruit's" behalf, for what that may or may not be worth. The bottom line is that there are plenty of D-I athletes who are not on scholarship. Or they are receiving a partial which can range from very little to almost all. Each school determines how it wants to handle scholarships, within the NCAA guidelines. Just because a school CAN give out X number of full ride basketball scholarships does not mean the school or coach chooses to actually award that many.

Vulture - does "recruited walk on" only apply to D-I or D-II? I'm a little confused because there aren't any athletic scholarships in D-III, but there are recruits and there are walk-ons - if I have the right understanding of walk on, which I think of as an athlete who has their first contact with the coach/team after they come to college. My understanding doesn't matter for my child, since she's all set, but other parents have asked me about the process and I don't want to get them as confused about this as I am.

If you define "walk on" as somebody who doesn't get an athletic scholarship, then I guess it would only apply to D1 or D2. Vulture pretty much captured it. There are plenty of walkons - even in football or basketball - that are recruited or invited to walkon but not offered a scholarship. They can help in varying degrees with admissions - if you are on the borderline, the coach can help - how much depends on the school. In smaller sports, there are many athletes who go on official recruiting visits but may not be offered any athletic money since there isn't much available - they are obviously in contact with coach before they arrive at college. There are also walkons who only meet coach after arriving at school. At least that has been my observation so far. Hope that helps.

Thanks! I think I should just tell people to come to CC and read a lot of old threads to get an idea of the variety of experiences people have....
