Athletic Recruitment at Pomona

When does Pomona swim extend recruit trip offers or suggest a pre-read? Or do you ask for one? We visited over the summer. My student has strong academics and scores, the coach stated he’d be a fit, but we’ve heard nothing about a trip or pre-read

I would recommend asking the coach if the recruiting trip will be offered. S2 visited Pomona and spoke with the coach in the spring. About a month ago the coach asked my son for transcripts and scores. At this point we don’t know how the pre-read is faring and, in truth, are not expecting much. Another D3 school is at the top of S2’s list, though, and he told the coach there that it is his #1. In addition he asked if he would be able to attend one of the recruiting trips. The coach there asked for the transcripts and scores and a week later S2 was offered a spot on a recruiting trip. S2 would not be considered a top recruit for either school, but would be a solid addition.

The date for the first pre-read passed in early August. If the coach did not submit your child’s academic stats by then, you missed the first pre-read. I submitted my materials to the coach when I made my initial contact, and he submitted them for a pre read because I am supposedly a top 5 recruit in my sport. I did not ask for one. At this stage I would ask the coach for a pre-read not only to gauge their interest in your child (if they say they can’t, they are probably not interested) as it seems to me that their are 3 rounds of pre-reads.

did anyone get a positive response from their pre-read?

D got a positive response.

After a recruit trip, what are the next steps for the parent / recruit: wait and see? ask for coach interest? Where is the line between expressing extreme interest in a program and being considered too aggressive?

I think pure wait and see is too passive. The coach is used to recruits asking if they can receive some support and what that support means. Depending where Pomona stands on your son’s list, you can do a lot of things. If it is #1, then I would give the coach the good news and ask what the coach recommends. If he plans to apply ED to Pomona no matter what, then I would let the coach know that too. If your son’s not sure, then you can ask the coach what the difference is between applying ED and RD for a recruit. All these things can get the conversation going and with that you may be able to figure out where your son stands. In all probability the coach will recommend applying ED even if his support means little. It will be difficult to figure it all out, but sometimes the coaches can be very honest and very helpful. Keep the conversation going. Good luck to your son.

Can someone explain more about the pre read cycles? The coach is doing a “pre-read” now and we’ll hear back in the next day or two. Is this a back sign that the pre-read wasn’t done earlier? In reading past replies, it appears that the coach would either say not likely to be admitted or likely to be admitted. If the later is the case, does this mean yes?

I don’t think it’s a bad sign the pre-read was not done earlier, but I can’t be sure of that. I am pretty sure, though, that the coach wants the pre-read done before the ED deadline. I would expect that if the pre-read comes back with a positive result, then the coach will recommend applying ED. The coach knows that applying ED gives the applicant (the athlete he wants) the best chance of admittance. It does not mean it’s a sure thing necessarily. If it comes to that point, you should ask the coach as much as you need to in order to best understand your chances. Good luck.

My son’s experience: was spotted by a coach (fball) at a camp out east and invited him to visit Pomona, which we did and he loved it. During discussions, the coach advised S that without Calculus on his senior schedule, there was no hope and they wouldn’t bother to submit him for a pre-read. This caused a bit of a scramble to find a summer Pre-Calc class so S could meet that criteria. With that taken care of, S submitted transcripts, ACT scores, resume and class schedule for a pre-read in late August. He got a “likely to admit” result and has applied ED1.

So now we are just waiting to see. He has a few back up applications waiting to go and a few NESCAC coaches (who know he’s applied ED to Pomona) calling to make sure that they remain on his list, but Pomona is his first choice by a country mile.

Hi, Kber13
How can your son apply multiple EDs for different schools?
My daughter is on the same boat as your S. she is recruited and with “likely to admit” from Pomona coach. I could not believe she turned down a likely letter from an Ivy and risks for Pomona! Worst of all, She does not have any other backup plan besides UC.
I respect her decision but it’s just nerve wracking!

Good luck on both of them!

Hi HorseInwater

I may have been unclear. He has only applied ED at Pomona. He has 2-3 coaches at other schools who are interested, but know the situation. If he gets turned down by Pomona, he will apply ED2 at Middlebury or Bowdoin, with the coach’s support.

Right now he has completed exactly 1 college application: Pomona’s.

Hopefully it’s one and done.

When talking to my son about how to handle other interested schools, my advice was to be 100% honest about his situation. I said, that in my opinion and experience, honesty would burn you 50% of the time and help you 50% of the time, but you’d sleep better if you were honest. And it’s easier to keep track. Maybe I’m right and maybe not. But don’t underestimate the value of a good night’s sleep.

Also,

Best of luck ! I expect she will hear good news. If somehow she doesn’t, any kid who is good enough to have a shot at Pomona will have a decent shot at a large number of great opportunities with ED2 or general admission, so I suspect she will be just fine in the end!

What is her sport?

Thank you, kber13. I was in the hurry yesterday and did not read your previous post careful enough. I told my daughter about your son’s admission status. She heard from the swimming coach that Pomona is rebuilding their football team and they will grab good football player! i think your son is in the best possible admission situation, but it’s always a good idea to have a back up plan.
My D is a swimmer and I know coach wants her badly. the question is whether the admission will go through… Did the football coach mention when we will hear admission result? the swimming coach told her sometime after thanksgiving but from previous posts it seems that we have to wait until mid December
Did you son go to OV Middlebury or Bowdoin? My daughter went to 2 ivies and fall into love with Pomona  She did not go to OV for Williams nor Amherst although was invited. Maybe I will ask her to re-contact the coaches, just in case…

Hi again. Interesting info about the football recruiting- thanks! They have a new(ish) Defensive coach and this seems to be contributing to some changes. S asked if there was any way he would hear earlier than 12/15 and the answer was “probably not, but if so, only by a day or two”. It’s possible admissions might tell the coaches as they mail out the letters, so we’d get word just prior to the snail mail notification.

He went to OV at Middlebury and Bowdoin, We did a number of unofficial visits and it seems like a ton of camps. Glad that’s over! We visited Amherst twice and it was my personal favorite. :). He had some initial interest from a few Ivies, but in the end decided he’s more of a DIII student /athlete and even the Ivies D1 programs would make him feel more like an employee than a student.

S liked just about every school we saw, but loved Pomona!

When I asked about the translation from “likely to admit” to actually admitted, the Pomona coaches thought it was about 95%, so pretty good. But I’d keep in touch with other interested parties just in case! He’s sends about 4-5 coaches his highlights after each game and sent his first marking period grades as well, just to keep the lines of communication open. I think some of the schools have definitely moved on, which is understandable, but one or two still show sincere interest and have asked him to let them know as soon as he hears from Pomona. It’s an exhausting process and we will all be happy when it’s finally over!

thank for your info.
let’s hope for the best and Good luck to your son!

Do recruited athletes hear from admissions early?

Hi gmj. According to what we’ve been told by the coaches, no they won’t hear earlier than anyone else. If the do, it might only be on unofficial “heads up” the day letters are mailed.

Unfortunately not, athletes hear the same time as everyone else according to the coach for my sport

@horseInwater‌ : congrats! Both our kids made it!
