Athletic Recruitment?

To the knowledgeable around here:

How much weight is placed on recruits? If you're formally on a coach's list in the admissions office, are you given special consideration or is it just another positive part of your application? The coach I talked to said that while it won't help a weak applicant much, it would help an already solid applicant. I just didn't want to press him as to what degree, but with applications submitted and whatnot, I'm curious now.

Does anyone have experience being recruited, or having a kid recruited? I'm really asking some of the parents or current students hanging around. Or if someone's applying this year and got a good answer out of their coach, that'd be cool, too.

Go Engineers!

i am in teh exact same situation. I've already applied EA so maybe we'll find out how much it helps in a month. Since my app is already solid, we'll see if it tips me in.

but ye if anyone has any expereince with this I would like to know as well.

What I believe happens is that you get a little note in your file about it, and that's it. Some adcom people may be super excited and rate you higher because of it, some may not care as much... but I suppose it's a plus overall?

I only vaguely remember reading about this on some blog or other somewhere, so I may well be horribly wrong...

Someone elsewhere on CC came up with a good word to help prevent the overuse of "hook" - "tip". As in, if you're already a strong applicant under consideration, but it's coming down to a toss-up between you and one or several similar applicants as to who gets admitted, a tip can give you the tiny extra edge that you need to tip the balance in your favor. I'd say that being a recruit is a tip.
