Athletic schol/Need aid?

Would an athletic scholarship affect need based FA? For Example if COA is 20K and student "qualifies" for 10k in Need aid, And the school offers 10k for athletic money. Would the student be able to get the 10k in need aid, and in essence get a "free ride" or would the school say that the athletic money covers the need aid, so no additional money is coming? Thanks

It would depend on how the institution looks at the athletic scholarship. My institution looks at institutional aid as either need-basd or merit based. Merit scholarships are not factored into need but reduce the difference from the cost and need. Other institutions may reduce ones need by merit awards.

Unfortunately, the answer to your question is “maybe” and “it all depends”. Schools will have different policies covering that question.

Thanks for the info. Now Lets say the student qualifies for 15k in need aid, Am I right in assuming that the school would provide 5K, while the other 5 needed to cover COA would be up to the school policy?

The 5000EFC would generally not be covered by any sort of need based aid. This may vary somewhat at some schools but in general is the case, especially where federal aid is involved.

How the remaining 5000 need is met will depend on the school also. If the EFC is 5000 then that EFC is too high for most federal grant aid. So if it is a school that provides mainly federal aid then the need may be met with all loans, or loans and work study (which might not be an option for an athlete). If it is a school that has it’s own grant aid then that may be provided.

Not necessarily. The amount of need the school will cover is dependent upon the school’s financial track record in conjunction with your EFC. Not all schools meet 100% of the need. Some schools may only be 70% or even less.
