Athletic Training Major, Search Colleges.

I really want to pursue a major in athletic training, which really narrows down my list of colleges to only the ones accredited by CAATE. I'm a little lost and confused as to where exactly I should go. I was considering udel, but I'm not sure whether it's a good investment or not (there might be other better ones for the same tuiton or something). I also want to go somewhere along the east coast, preferably on the northeastern region, but I'm honestly open to suggestions anywhere. Any suggestions or advice, please? I'm sort of stuck and I'm looking for any recommendations!

What are your finances?

I have no idea. Obviously nothing too expensive, but we can afford a tuition range around udel’s. It all really depends on whether my parents think the cost is worth it for the actual college. For now, I’m open to any suggestions, and I think I’ll focus on the cost later, when I’m actually considering the colleges and really looking into them.

What are your stats? This will give us more of an idea as to what types of schools you are competitive for. Also, if you may just want to peruse the list of CAATE accredited schools (http://caate.net/accredited-programs/search-for-accredited-programs/</a>) and filter by state or program type if there is one you prefer.

For the SATs I got 630 in CR, 670 in math, and 760 in writing. I also took the ACTs, but the scores have yet to come out. I visited the site and have a few colleges in mind, but I honestly don’t know whether certain tuiton fees are worth it for the school…I’m seriously just open to any recommendations, particularly ones along the northeast coast. Also, would I be able to get into Penn State and Udel with my scores?

Boston University has a pretty reputable athletic training program… also an AT/DPT 6 year program if you are interested. I think UConn has a pretty good program AT program as well.

Penn State is a high match and UDel a match.

My DS was considering athletic training and/or physical therapy. We visited Quinnipiac University twice and Ithaca College three times. He was accepted at both schools into the AT/DPT program at Quinnipiac (6-7 yr program) and the DPT program at Ithaca. He ultimately decided on Ithaca College for the DPT program, although they also have a very strong AT program (but not an official combined program like Quinnipiac). He just liked the campus feel better at Ithaca, from day one. My DS is not a good test taker and scored much lower than you but was academically ranked very high in his class. He got the maximum merit scholarship at both schools. What is nice about Quinnipiac is that the scholarship is good for all 7 years (including the grad portion); at Ithaca the scholarship is only for the first 4 years. Good luck.

Thank you all so much. This really helped, and I actually have looked into UConn as well and am considering it. Thank you.

Also, someone recently suggested Ohio State University to me. When I looked into it, it seemed about the same as UDel and Penn State, nothing TOO special, but their athletics program seemed very strong (Division 1, which is also something I am keeping an eye out for). Any advice on that? Would it just be better to stick with Penn State or UDel?

I’m not sure about the costs for each one but Ohio State is about on par with UDel and Penn State academically overall. Ohio State will have the biggest sports scene, but Penn State also provides a big time sports atmosphere. Delaware lesser so but they have a competitive FCS football team.

I see. Okay thank you very much.

Would like to ask Hockeymom … Some questions … Daughter is looking to go AT/PT route …, looking at Northeastern, Quinnipiac, Ithaca and Duquesne … All 0-6/7 direct entry … Number one in NE or QU at the moment have not looked at Ithaca yet … My concern is NE she has great grades 4.4 weighted 3.7 unweighted but SAT are just 1700 6 AP courses under belt and 3 more Senior year …and lots of Sports/ Dance/ volunteer/ Leadership EC’s What’s the likely hood of getting accepted and which one would you think would offer the best Merit package … I think she is similar to your son Stats wise … Thanks

Waiting on second round SAT scores and ACT from June

Collegemoneyman - Just saw your question on CC. Sounds like our children do have very similar stats. My son also scored a 1700 on the SATs which did not nearly reflect the type of student he is. We were very cognisant of “test optional” schools when applying to colleges. He applied to 8 schools (4 of which were “test optional” and he did not submit his test scores). He was accepted at 7 of the schools including Quinnipiac & Ithaca, he was waitlisted at Northeastern. While most schools will tell you that they judge the applicants holistically, I can’t believe that schools that receive 30,000+ applications (i.e. NE) can read thru every applications and I truly think they use the test scores as an initial “weeder-outer”. Also, if she is accepted I do not think she will qualify for merit aid with those stats, based on some of my DS’s friends who were accepted but chose not to go due to cost (I’m not sure about need-based). My DS had very strong extracurriculars, very good teacher recs, and he also had shadowed both a PT and an athletic trainer (total of 50 hrs) during the summer between his junior & senior year. He received the max amount of merit aid from all schools he was accepted to. I believe right now that Quinnipiac is the only program of that group that offers the dual AT/DPT. It is very selective but I think your DD would qualify. At accepted student day they did tell us that not very many students complete the program, they either just go AT or just PT, or switch out; it is very rigourous. I can’t speak for Duquesne other than my DS’s current roommate (at Ithaca) who is also a PT major was accepted there and it ultimately came down between Duquesne and Ithaca for him. One final note - I believe student interest plays a large role in these schools. My son kept in regular contact with both admissions counselors from Quinn & Ithaca. He did have an interview at Quinn which I think worked to his advantage. My DS is extremely happy at Ithaca (Dean’s List both semesters). It is well known in New York for having a very good program. Best of luck!

Thanks it was helpful … I expected as much and just want to manage expectations …sound like NE is a stretch and would likely get no merit … ACT score 27 and SAT’s now mid 1700 . I went to Duquense so I am quite familiar with it … We need to visit Ithaca soon. I was very impressed with QU, campus, and admissions.
She is doing her observation hours this summer as well …
It’s going to come down to $$ and fate …
What range of merit $$ would you think would be offered at Ithaca and QU? I just hope it’s a quick decision and made sooner rather than later…

Any other suggestions ? just don’t want to miss any or overlook ?

Collegemoneyman- @ Quinnipiac I believe it was either $16 or $18,000 for 7 years. At Ithaca it was $18,000 (Presidential Scholarship) for 4 years. At Ithaca there is also a Leadership Scholarship (I think it may be around $10,000) the students can apply for which is very selective but is independant of other scholarships they receive so I’m assuming you can tack it on to a Presidential Scholarship. My DS’s roommate received some merit aid and also the Leadership Scholarship. Good Luck!! Not sure where you are from - we are from RI and Quinnipiac is only about 2 hours away vs 5 1/2 to Ithaca. My DS and I both preferred the surrounding area around Ithaca much better than Quinnipiac (basically rural vs urban). Although both schools have the same student body size, DS liked that Ithaca is right next to Cornell. He socializes a lot at Cornell so can still have the feeling of a big D1 school if he is in the mood. Quinnipiac by far has better dorms. Good Luck!!

Northeastern University has one of the top programs in the country, but the school is a bit expensive. If you can afford it, they provide internships with a large range of employers through their co-op program.

Here is a good guide: http://www.northeastern.edu/careers/guides/athletic-training/</a>

Hockeymom12 and informative … Thank you both. I do think NE is still a reach and we would be offered no $$ merit and we will not get anything for need base. I am happy that QU and Ithaca offered about the same merit award. The fact that QU will apply to all 7 years is even better. We will visit Ithaca in the fall but given what you said about QU dorms and asthetics I think it may have a leg up on Ithaca in my DD search criteria… We are from Delaware so QU is 3.5 hour and Ithaca 5 hours and Duquese 6 hours.
I will let you know … Thanks again

Please let me know of any other schools we should look to for DPT.
