What is the school spirit and pride in princeton like? What about sports fan? Are alumni supportive of the football team and is that really a powerful social force?

i would say that school spirit is pretty strong at princeton, though not as strong as at the big sports schools (often state schools). alumni are definitely supporters of the football team; in general, alumni at Princeton are known to be EXTREMELY loyal to their alma mater. I was just at the princeton-yale football team last weekend and there was a very strong turn-out of alumni and student fans.

Well, I wouldn't say school spirit is quite as prevalent as it was in years past. Many alumni have been angered by the administration's increasingly "modern" and liberal reforms, the most obvious of which being ending early decision. That said, my impression (as a frequent visitor and prospective student) is that school spirit among the students is still fairly high.

I think school spirit is higher, actually. Go to a dance performance or an arch sing - you will see plenty.

I would agree with CDS32090 over the last few years, although Alumother is right in that there are still many alumni who come out. I don't think it is so much that alumni attendance has decreased because they are angry, but more because the sorts of classes that Rapelye et. al. are courting are not as fond of Princeton, in the state that it is now, as the former classes.

I.e. WASPY old guy would prefer a school of WASPY young guys than a minority student would prefer a school that is partly minority students and partly WASPY young guys

It feels to me (a freshman) like it's pretty high. I was definitely not among the rahrah school spirited ones in high school, but I've been to a bunch of football, basketball, vball etc games dressed up complete w/ the face paint and all just because the spirit is so infectious among my friends and classmates. Plus, yeah, like someone else said, the attendance at arch sings and shows and tour leaders for orange key etc is enormous and reflective of the majority of students' feelings for the school
