Son was a JV player when he was a freshman last year in PHS. But this sophomore year, he could not make into JV for winter sport. He finished the try out for spring sport this week, well, he called me tonight, the other kids are so strong and he afraid there is no chance for him.

My question, is there any chance for a kid with great interest about sports (he does has few years experience but not as strong as other recruit player) to be in a JV or varsity team?

That is a pretty broad question. Can you be more specific? In general JV teams are significantly less strong than varsity because schools recruit for varsity teams. Especially at smaller schools simply because the pool of possible players is smaller. There is always thirds as well. The sport makes a difference as well. Some schools recruit for certain sports so naturally those teams would be much stronger than a sport they do not actively recruit for.

Your son could also spend time preparing for the sports he is interested in over the summer. Kids who excel at specific sports generally spend a lot of time playing these sports on their own…practicing in the back yard with dad, for example or getting together with friends…in the summer or off season. If your son does not make the team this year, and wants a shot next year, he needs to invest some time and practice.

A lot of kids trying out now for their freshman spring sport, have spent at least a week of their spring break in various camps for that sport. (Once they get on the team, they willdo so as part of the team, next spring break) . They also spend one to three weeks in the summer going to specialty clinics/camps for their sport.
