Hi,

I am an exchange student coming from the UK. Does anyone know of ATMs on campus that charge a small fee and have a high withdrawal limit for overseas (debit) cards?

Best wishes

There are ATM machines located at several places on campus (Ilini Union, bookstore, recreation centers, others). What I do not not know is how they treat foreign debit cards.

For whatever reason it appears that almost all ATMs on campus are affiliated with TCF National Bank. I am sure there are others but it just seemed that TCF is all over (in the Union, Bookstore, etc.). Perhaps you can go on TCF bank’s website and look up their debit card/withdrawal policies. Hope this helps.

I’m also thinking of opening a local bank account.
I will be staying very close to the union.

Do you think I will use checks much for everyday purchases (food, clothes etc). In the UK I always use debit cards. Checks are infact pretty obselete.

Are there any particular checking accounts you would recommend?

You’ll be using a debit card. As has been said, TCF Bank is widely used on campus and has a staffed branch directly across from the quad, next to the uiuc ID card office where you’ll obtain your ID. Both are located inside the Illini Union Bookstore.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

I am forseeing that I will need to get a money order when I arrive, to pay for my accommodation. Please could you suggest reliable banks/shops on/near campus?

Regards
