What if you intern for Condoleezza Rice at the State Department? Is that a good hook? ;)

Well I will post my hook
I am a Native American and a IMO Medalist and won the fields medal last year + Nobel prizes in all categories.

ehh just kidding, but some of you guys are amazing. I feel like I have no chance at Stanford next year. :(

once again at least you are part of a minority so your chances are wayyy higher

I'm a URM (black) with a 2370 SAT (perfect 1600)/ 2350 SAT II's. I dont know how much of a hook this will be considering I don't have straight A's or anything like that. Also, I was able to produce a research report, but Stanford doesnt want to see it so idk if that can be a hook.

AngelFidelis: you're not as screwed as you would be if you were an Asian male.

I weaved computer science pretty heavily into my common app essay, which may be a hook since I'm a girl. I also emphasized my passion for learning throughout my application, and have research and outside courses to back it up. Aside from that, I generally consider myself a strong candidate (with test scores, grades, ECs, etc.)... so hopefully things will work out :).

Are there no Inter STS or ISEF people here?

I'm a recruited athlete. Besides that, I guess my hook is that I homeschooled for part of highschool?

-I was born and lived in Israel for eight years.... speak/read/write Hebrew and Russian fluently as well
-Cancer Research for 3 years - Siemens Semifinalist
-My Common App long response is pretty unique as well

born/raised in germany (will have dual citizenship)
triplet
internship in France
fluent in Spanish, German, English

...hopefully my ACT is good, because my CR (620) will really hurt me otherwise :(

...and I'm damn fine

JK

i think i have a decent hand dealt to me..

president of Lions Club and Rotary club, president of the family guy club, and ping pong club, NHS and MUN member for 3 and 4 years respectively

varsity track, varsity cheer (captain), and national partner stunt champion....

so yea.. male cheerleader, a few focused clubs and i have awesome letters of rec.. otherwise im just the same as everyone else in forms of GPA and SAT (3.81 unweighted, 2220)

does anyone know if letters from alumni help?

i had a close family friend write one as an optional letter.. and its incredible, but i dont think it will have much effect on the admissions officer..of course this alumni did donate quite a bit of money......

My hooks are....
1. ISEF 2nd place grand award (Team leader)
2. Varsity Soccer 4 yrs (Assistant Coach)
3. Founder/Captain/Coach Korean Soccer Team representing school
4. Player in Korean Amateur Soccer League
5. School president
6. I had a severe knee surgery and I can't play sports for the rest of my life.... (sucks but a hook..)

ahh i think everyone feels inferior to everyone else - but isn't that the beauty of stanford? just think, to those who get in, how amazing all of the peers will be.

as far as "hooks," i'm pretty well-rounded:
-600 hours of community service, local and international (translating spanish)

-2210 sat/ 780/740/720 (USH, SPAN, MATH II)

haha, this thread is just making the wait more unnerving cause so many of you have really great arguments for acceptance.

I don't know if it's the SCEA craze, but I'm starting to really like Stanford.

puerto rican female from california (kind of rare)
i do ballet seriously... like 18 hours a week
went to stanford summer program for 3 years in a row.
i sent in fine arts supplements for dance and piano.. so that could be a hook if they like them.

but i think my SAT could screw me over (2140)
and that i don't have straight As throughout high school but i have a high rank so maybe that could help 7/~800

I don't have hooks, but my strong points are

I gave maps to the US Americans to help the Iraq and such as know where the US is on the map.

Don't let this thread discourage you! I found that the same people who seemed insanely brilliant when they posted their info on CC as high school seniors are now considered to be insanely brilliant even in the context of Stanford.

My "hooks" would be:

--United States Senate page
--internship at World Hip Hop/Aerobics Championships in Los Angeles for two summers
--really extensive volunteering at church for about a decade

Haha Jenkster! I literally lol-ed, that should uh, help South Africa, and uh help the Iraq and Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us.

lol have you seen Jimmy Kimmel making fun of her statement?
