Attention FA Applicants

Well-said.

Tom, I am going to attempt to make it a little more comfortable for you. Now that you know that applying for FA confers a liability, just imagine how much more proud you will be in the event that you do get in!!!! I sense your frustration and this is just a feeble attempt to look at the positive side.

I do not think any of us on this board have the right to complain.

As hmom5 has pointed out, no one on the Board of Trustees (not at Exover, and not at noname academy) are pleased with the financial aid cut.

Schools, especially private schools, have no obligation to provide any aid. Schools such as Exeter are doing what they think is best and even though they may no longer be "need blind" (imho no schools was EVER fully need blind) it does not mean they will not meet a significant portion of the need in acceptances.

This will also mean that they will stop trying to protect their yield as previously done, and those who desire a private education so much may need to take loans.

Remember this, some may be angry they are not born rich...
-First off, join the other 99% of us
-I guarantee you if you are reading this that you are fairly smart, rich in intellect...
-Life isn't fair, we do the best to balance the scale

All that being said, I truly hope that everyone gets the financial aid that they need to attend.

Also, check out Monticello loans. Specialized for boarding schools.

No, I appreciate that. And I guess if I don't get in I can comfort myself with the idea that maybe, just maybe, I got rejected on the basis of being unable to pay anywhere near full tuition.

Speculation: are they going to wait list lots of full pays so that they may step in when the full pays who thought they could afford it last fall realize that they can't now and back out? Will they have a reserve of full pays to tap in order to replace accepted full pays that back out????

I really hope, for this reason, the economy gets better. Remember by the time we are in college that the this crisis may (hope) be in the history books and we WILL laugh on it.

Also remember 33% is a fair amount, and let's hope people get the FA they need.

"I do not think any of us on this board have the right to complain. "

I agree but its not as if you're part of the US. This helps you, its a little easier to understand Tom when I think of the fact that I will most likely be waitlisted at the majority if not all of my schools because of FA.

What do you mean by "not as if you are part of the US?"

Sorry, I truly do feel bad.

In the big game I think I am still part of us, however overused this saying is "There are kids starving in India", from this board I can infer:

-We all have functioning computers
-We have parents who give a rat's @$$
-We have this great opportunity to go to BS

I honestly hope that FA does not make as big of an impact.

I mean that he/she does not need FA, not saying you should feel bad. To tell you the truth I'd be happy if I wasn't FA, I wouldn't truly care about everyone else. I was just stating the fact. Ya it's kind of like hearing about many people dying on TV and being sad, then having someone you know die. Totally different things.

I mean maybe your just a reeeeally good person.

Pan, mpicz is most likely referring to one of principalviola's posts where she stated her parents bring in upwards of 600k a year. I still remember that post whenever principalviola claims to feel bad for "the 99% of us."

Just FYI, when I made that post my parents were going to pay 5k, and no more.

"First off join the other 99% of us" meaning I'm in that. I'm not looking down on the "99%"... And I never said feel bad for the 99%...

The thing I feel bad about is the change from need blind to non need blind...

Oh, yeah, that's right - that was the same post in which you admitted that you were planning on applying for financial aid! With an income upwards of 600k! Way to leave some of the wealth for the people who actually need it.

Not my fault parents care[ed] about that last 2% of their income

^^True. Can't blame the rich people, blame the economy. Which bush ****ed up...Clinton was doing a great job till he got a little horny. Who can blame him tho, but he shoulda picked a better looked woman :D

Just trying to loosen up the mood :P , we're figuring out tomorrow. Lets be mad after know for SURE.

Unbelievable. Am I talking to a real person, principalviola? Never mind, don't answer that... Clearly I can't win here.

I thought Monica was cute! An how do you remember that far back anyway? Aren't you an applicant?

The poster who said something to the effect of that if you're reading this, you're already halfway there, is exactly right. The great thing is that in one generation, you can go from being in need of a lot of aid to sending several kids to elite schools with no aid. My husband and I have done exactly that.

Few are born wealthy and for generations things like a prep school education were only for very few. We've made a lot of progress, but it's never going to be a money blind world.

When you have intelligence and desire, school becomes much less important. You will do fine wherever you are if you put the same drive you put into this effort into all you do.

There are always silver linings. One thing I'll point out for those of you who don't make it this year is that going to a top prep school lessens your chance of getting into an ivy for most. You will be competing with legacies and wealthy kids with ins, lots of recruited athletes and the Country's top URMs. Colleges will only take so many from one school. So being the top student at your local school might be fate's way of getting you a seat at Harvard.

So who knows what the best route is to where you want to go? Just stay motivated to do well and good things will follow.

And, yeah, I like your reasoning mpicz!

Good point hmom.

Totally second the last paragraph.
