Hey, I was wondering if there were any current Macalester students with pictures of their actual dorm rooms (freshman dorms preferred). Also wondering how you like the school? What don't you like? Thanks

Hi, I'm a Macalester first-year student this year, so I thought I'd come say a few words or two. I'm in the process of getting some pictures of my dorm room and a couple of others, and I'll post those as soon as I get them.

As for what I like about the school, I really love everything here. I think maybe my favorite thing so far is the commitment to true excellence...professors get to know you and your potential very quickly and then help you think seriously about the work you do. I can pretty honestly say that I feel like I'm getting as good of an education here at Macalester as I could have gotten at any of the Ivy League schools. Students are very motivated, though they still have time to relax, and the environment is so diverse (both culturally and when it comes to activities) that you can find a place to fit in (or two or three places even!).

My least favorite thing is probably the occasional one-sided political perspective from some of the students...a few tend not to see both sides of arguments, though the professors are very good about making sure all sides of an argument are discussed in class.

I really can't say too many bad things about the school...and I want to keep this post relatively short...feel free to message or e-mail me if you have more questions or want better answers than the ones I've given here :) I'd be glad to tell you more about the first-year experience here at Mac, and if I personally don't have answers, I can find someone who does!

hi, my name is lina. I live in NYC, so its pretty hard to find out about macalester. I've heard a few things about it and it peaked my interest, but thats about it. I was just wondering if you could tell me a little about the students. What are they like? Where else did you apply and where else did you consider? I want a school thats laid back, possibly hippie-ish, with all around cool students. Is that mac?

Thanks

Lina

Hi Lina, thanks for your interest :) I'm actually from Philadelphia, so I'm not too far from NYC...It took me some time to learn about Macalester, but I'm glad I did.

As far as describing the students goes, its sort of hard to generalize the personalities here on campus. There are so many diverse perspectives on life here, so there really isn't a "typical Mac student." Generally though, students are open to understanding others, even if they don't necessarily hold the same viewpoints. As far as the "hippie" environment, I think you'd be able to find people you get along with, but the stereotype that all Mac students are hippies isn't true, in my opinion.

The academic environment is rigorous, and students are here to learn, but students are also very involved in the community and outspoken when it comes to making a difference in the community. Macalester actually has one of the highest percentages for student community and political involvement in the country, and you definitely experience a pretty well informed student body.

Back to academics though, Mac isn't a death trap of school work...students do have fun, even while they're working hard. Simply put, Mac students are pretty "all around cool." It seems like there's something for everyone, no matter what your interests are. I think it pretty much comes down to investigating the types of activities you'd like to be involved in and finding out about how Macalester caters to your specific interests, both academically and extracurricularly.

As to where else I applied...I'm from Philadelphia, so Haverford College was at the top of my list, along with Bryn Mawr. Other places I applied included Dickinson, Bates College in Maine, Boston University, William and Mary College, and Bucknell. I actually gained admission to all but Haverford, but my top four choices were Macalester, Dickinson, Bryn Mawr, and William and Mary.

Hopefully this helps...let me know if you'd like me to clarify any of my thoughts or if you have more questions!

Sorry to steal your thread, but I think that what I have to say fits best here.

I was wondering if any current Macalester know a freshmen there named Luke? He is asian and is missing his middle figure on one of his hands.

Don't worry about 'stealing' the thread...it's open to everybody. I don't know Luke personally, but he lives in my dorm on a different floor...I'll try and look him up when I get back from the holidays. I think one of my other friends may know him. Anyhow, hope this helps. Let me know if I can do anything else for you!

Could you, or someone else, slide the picture at this web site under his door? It was part of a joke last year that he though he figured out but never really did. He should get a big laugh out of it. Thanks!
