ATTN: Princeton students much more unhappy?

"ya the PRINCETON review is a real good place to get your princeton stats

im SURE they are unbiased....."

The Princeton Review isn't affiliated with Princeton Unviersity. They have nothing to do with each other, hence why they aren't biased

grad, here's an article from globe and mail:

<a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20061030.URCabroadp58/BNStory/univreport06%5B/url%5D">http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20061030.URCabroadp58/BNStory/univreport06</a></p>

they are biased in favor of all ivy league schools

do you think they didn't know the connotations of "princeton" before founding the company?

Yeah, I mean everyone knows Burger King is biased in favor of Kings.. why are you guys trying to deny the obvious!?

Absolutely brilliant, WindSlicer.

princeton review founder john katzman '81 explains:

"The name, incidentally, wasn't a reference to the university at that time; it was a reference to the Educational Testing Service (ETS) [adminstrator of the SAT, GRE, TOEFL, et al]. They were known at that time as 'Princeton' because they had a mailing address there."

<a href="http://www.princeton.edu/%7Epaw/web_exclusives/features/features_013002b.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.princeton.edu/~paw/web_exclusives/features/features_013002b.html</a></p>

they aren't analagous - the word "princeton" had definite meaning before Princeton Review was founded, which is the point I'm trying to make. There are thousands of possible names for a college-prep company, so why would they pick the same name as an established and prestigious university?

i just told you why: because "princeton" was also synonymous at the time with the administrator of the test that the company was founded to prepare students for. even granting your point, though, that doesn't make the rankings biased, especially when they're based entirely on student responses to survey questions, not on founders' opinions. by the way, where is my link to the OP's article? that is, after all, the supposed basis for all this discussion.

Because that is where they are located!!!!!!!!

Hehe nice one, windslicer:)

levelone, I was with you regarding bias when albert posted a blanket statement about the happiness of students at Canadian unis, which he doesn't have any reliable data on.

However, you're trolling much worse than he is, making much less sense, and generally being more of an idiot, especially by arguing that the Princeton Review is biased. Come on. Just because it doesn't agree with your point of view doesn't mean it's biased. Your only argument why it would be has been roundly disproved by more than 1 person. Give it up.

On another note, Chanakya Sethi went to my school - he was a good guy. :)

HAHA you went to UCC... you are an elitist. I bet you row crew don't you?

alright
first off as a current princeton student, and as a proud canadian from toronto, I think I can safely say that students are much, much happier at Princeton that at any of the Canadian universities (I have friends at next to all of them). Its physically impossible to have better professors at a school than Princeton does right now. Princeton is amazing and I have never regretted my decision to come here, even though it involved turning down a full ride to Queens U., one of the most prestigious universities in Canada. Princeton is at its prime, having recently built a new residential college (named Whitman, my home next year) that looks absolutely stunning, reached a landmark agreement with the eating clubs regarding financial aid, and creating plans for arts and science "neighborhoods" on campus. I have never been unhappy with naything at Princeton, from the food to the dorms to free laundry.
Btw submitter, you should probably do some research first. The Princeton Review is 100 percent unrelated to Princeton- the eponymous university was selected because the founder of the review thought it gave an "air" of prestige. Finally, there is no way to scientifically measure happiness, and I hope all of you have the brains to understand that or else you shouldn't be on this forum.

you seem very snobby. People are happy at all sorts of schools, and it is stupid to assume everyone at Princeton is "much much happier" than anyone going to a Canadian university. You have the attitude of a very rich person - I'm assuming you went to a private school in Toronto. If your idea of happiness is "eating clubs" and croquet, all the more power to you. At least Canadian schools aren't full to the rafters with snobs like you. I hope you have the brains to understand that or else you shouldn't be on this forum.

levelone, I just wanted to tell you that I am very close to reporting you. Please stop being rude to other posters. It is not helpful to anyone.
I am not saying that you should not express your opinion or anything--just try to do it in a slightly kinder way.

hmmm I should mention Princeton's great financial aid policy, without which I wouldn't be here :). I'd love to argue with you though except the fireplace needs more 20's for kindling and the guys sitting there only have benjamins.

lol, ragingbull!
I'm looking forward to contributing to that fire next year :)

Re: Princeton students much more unhappy?

“The globe and mail yesterday (Canadian paper) just recently published a survey on happiness at various Canadian universities. Most did well. THEN they showed the results from a few American schools (all elite schools - pton, harvard, yale etc.). It looks like on average, Americans are much less happy with their schooling.

I just posted this in the Princeton section because Princeton was one of the lowest (NYU was highest), and I've heard this rumor before

“I dunno... in this survey I read they had quotes from Pton students who said they were really unhappy with the quality of the professors and they thought the students would be more intelligent instead of white-bread Boarding School graduates.

To the OP, Gradatgrad (and to Levelone with your additional comments):

Something is fishy here and I’m wondering if you don’t have an agenda to push. In surveys I’ve seen, Princeton nearly always ranks at or near the top in terms of student happiness while NYU is typically lower. (I mean no offense to NYU.) Might you have misread the chart?

Furthermore, your second statement to the effect that Princeton students said they were very unhappy with the quality of the professors followed by a demeaning reference to “white-bread Boarding School graduates” seems totally unbelievable to me. I’ll need to see that in the article to which you are referring.

Finally, I’ve gone to The Globe and Mail website and can find no reference to Princeton in the last thirty days yet you say the article appeared in yesterday’s issue. The following link goes to the newspaper’s search page for anyone who would like to research this:

<a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/search%5B/url%5D">http://www.theglobeandmail.com/search</a></p>

If you have a link to support the claims you’re making, please provide it. It’s certainly possible that I’ve missed it. This would be a very interesting survey result and one that is at odds with all other surveys I’ve seen.

I await proof.

levelone, your manners could seriously use some polishing because your rudeness towards everybody is starting to annoy me.

albert stop trolliing this thread you seem like you hate canadians and are really biased.

anyway welcome grad thanks for the info... Princeton seems to be going downhill these days in satisfaction

[/quote]

Seems like no one has yet been able to locate the globe and mail article gradatgrad was talking about. levelone, you simply based the above comment on gradatgrad's words, which no one is sure are true yet.

And for your information, I don't hate Canadians, whatever your reason for putting words into my mouth. Truth be told, I'm biased and have a preference towards certain schools, but that's because I've done my research on them.

And my conclusion is that Princeton is an amazing place. I guess everyone is entitled to his/her own opinions.

As for gradatgrad, please give us the link the article you were talking about. Thanks

eveyrone that I know who went/goes to Princeton loves it. I'll beleive them over some article.

i was going to say the same thing as sal- everyone i know at Princeton loves it. i also talked to a few alums who said they would like nothing better than to relive their years at Princeton-- they said it was the best experience of their lives.
