Atypical UVA student

hi, i'm going to be a senior this year and uva is one of the schools on my application list. I visited last year and though the campus was very nice, i was not too excited about the student's i saw. from my experience most of the students were the rich, preppy type, and i don't think i would fit in too well with this crowd. has anyone one here that isn't like that gone to uva and had a good experience?

(btw, i am not dissing those type of people, i just wouldn't fit in with them and i'm trying to get another person's opinon)

We’re a public school with just under 14,000 undergrads, so it may be a little hard to define a typical UVa student physically.

I know it is hard to judge the entire student body, but I have just heard from others that the student body is generally more leaning towards the preppy, frat side than other schools. I am not asking for someone to give me a description of the student body. I just want some accounts from students who maybe weren’t from this social group and their experiences

None of my friends are rich or preppy. It is a state school.
-A huge percentage of the student body gets financial aid, see [UVa - Need-based Undergraduate Financial Aid (detail)](http://www.web.virginia.edu/iaas/data_catalog/institutional/data_digest/aid.htm) but it says over 3000 students (of 13000) get need based aid, far from “everyone is rich”.
-If you go to atuva.net you can see the large amount and variety of student organizations around grounds.

I will also say I am nowhere near preppy. I am a computer geek, treasurer of the anime club here at UVA, my roommate is the president of the psi phi (lol, sci-fi) club, etc etc etc. I love UVA, and have never felt out of place. There are just so many people with so many interests here that you’ll find friends who enjoy what you enjoy. You might also want to look into Brown College, I have lived there all four years and the people there are just amazing. I might also discourage you from joining a greek organization for obvious reasons. I also feel it necessary to link to all of these pictures, lol: [popped collar - Google Image Search](<a href=“popped collar - Google Search”>popped collar - Google Search) Finally, I will say that while there are a sizable number of “preppy” people on campus (it is a state school, there are all sorts of people), these people are not automatically people you won’t get along with, they’re very nice people who just think it is very important to dress up for class, and don’t (usually) give me weird looks if I show up in my pajamas half asleep. ;)

I know where you’re coming from… I had the same concerns when considering UVA. There are definitely a lot of people who seem to fit the preppy stereotype since they all tend to dress the same… Granted, as people before me stated, UVA is a HUGE school… so in reality there are just as many if not more “non-preps” as there are preps. I myself don’t identify myself as preppy. I have acquaintances I definitely think would fit the preppy category (I’m just making an observation, not implying anything negative), but the majority of my closest friends I wouldn’t classify as preppy.

That’s what’s so great about UVA. it’s such a big school and you’ll meet tons of new people… and you’re bound to find the right niche and circle of friends. That’s just my two cents.

HHS310, don’t worry so much. Just because people dress in a way that you think is preppy doesn’t mean that they are different from you or unfriendly. On the other hand, while people care about how they look to an extent here, you’ll also find that most UVA students are very nice, friendly people. Honestly, it seems that the students who are decidedly “anti-preppy” are often times far more judgmental then the so-called preppy ones.

Also, fyi, UVA really isn’t the over the top, fake, popped-collar type of preppy place. Its more people make a conscious effort to make themselves presentable. But people really aren’t stereotypical, fake preps.

I wear popped collars … when I wake up 15 minutes before class, find out my bus leaves in 4 minutes and I forget to look in the mirror.

You’ll find people from all walks of life, trust me.
