AU Parents Thread

Hi everyone! I hope that we can get his thread going. I'm really happy that my son has been accepted to AU. Should we tell something about are kids? My son is an IR major who also got in at GW, Tulane, Pitt, Syracuse, and Drew. He decided on AU for the college, location and merit aid. I've gotten positive feeling from posters on the AU site ( I think they are mostly parents), they make me feel great about his decision. Good luck to All!

Which AU? My mother called American AU, but I have a feeling that’s not what you are talking about.

Hi Mathmom! Thanks for starting this thread. My daughter is in the Honors program at American and is a Musical Theater major. She was accepted by Brandeis, Northeastern and Muhlenberg, waitlisted at Skidmore and Oberlin. She took herself off the waitlists because she wanted finality. It came down to Brandeis and American. She attended admitted students day at both. Brandeis had her stay with a science major (horrors!); that and rainy weather probably had more of a negative impact than it should have. American didn’t arrange overnights, but via CC she found a generous and sweet theater student to stay with and felt welcome and at home. In the end, her gut sent her to American, though her merit award at American is contingent on maintaining an adequate GPA, and her award at Brandeis had no strings attached–so I hope her gut was operating at peak efficiency! From a parental point of view, one appealing aspect of American is its disability support services–it has two advisors who are specialists in ADHD and LD’s–D has both. She has been spending huge amounts of time on the Facebook group for the American Class of '13, where some are already seeking compatible roommates, since American’s system doesn’t attempt to match on style and personality, as some schools do. She is also trying to figure out which summer orientation date won’t interfere with her summer plans and dreading the math placement test. Since DH has never visited the school, we’ll attend the parent orientation–otherwise I’d skip it, since I don’t think it’s worth the time or money. Okay, that’s all I got!

It’s been suggested that this thread be moved to the AU site to make it easier to find, that seems like a good idea, so I’ll start it over there. And yes, AU is American U. in DC.

My son also needs a 3.2 to maintain his scholarship. He’s met future students via facebook ( I think), not too many boys, though!

ohh I was thinking Arizona University or Auburn University for AU
