My son who has been accepted and would like to attend Auburn University who has a 3.8 GPA but his test scores fall short of those needed for Freshman Scholarships. He is and NY resident and we have an EFC of 4868 I am wondering how generous their need based scholarship packages are and what others with similar situations have received. He is attending the Business School. I am also open to suggestions on best loan options.
Did you run the NPC on the school’s website? If so, it probably will tell you to expect very little in aid. Probably a small fed grant of maybe $1500-2000 and a $5500 loan. The OOS cost is probably about $45k.
Their need-based pkgs are LOUSY…which is typical of OOS public schools. They charge high rates because OOS families don’t pay taxes there. It wouldn’t make much sense for them to charge high rates and then drain their limited funds and give out need-based aid. Why bother having high OOS rates then, right?
Best loan options? Honestly, no one, particularly a modest income family, should be borrowing $100k-$200k. It’s doubtful that your income would qualify anyway.
His income, upon graduation, will probably only be able to support the low fed student loans, which aren’t enough to pay for this school.
This school is not affordable.
Where else did he apply and be accepted?
I see in another thread your son has an interest in fishing:

should note that he is a semi pro fisherman and has chosen Auburn because of their competitive fishing team. It is not considered an NCAA sport because there is award money involved, therefore there are no scholarships available. <<<

Is there nothing like this in NY?
While it may seem “necessary” to choose a school with a fishing team, if it’s not affordable, it won’t work.
