Which school has a better engineering program, honors program, and better overall academics? I've read a past topic on this, and seen the rankings, but can't get a clear enough answer. I know the two are close, but I can really only apply to one.

Also, who's more likely to shell out for a full ride? I'm ranked 3rd in my class with a 34 act. Our rank 7 just got a full ride to both Bama and Auburn, so I'm assuming I've got a good chance at both?... I'm basically applying for a financial safety, so I'd like the best combination of price and academics.

Only a commended merit scholar, though a 2270 SAT. 4.6 weighted, 12 AP courses, 3/700.
But regardless of my own stats, just wondering in general, which one is more likely to pay and which is better in engineering, honors, and academics.

Pancaked: I am copying the response from mom2collegekids in the other posting you placed.

Many merit scholarships have Dec 1st deadlines!

^^^

If you’re going to apply for big merit from Alabama and Auburn, then you need to apply soon…deadline is Dec 1st.

Bama would give you the most…full tuition plus $2500 per year…but you’d have to submit your app now. This money is assured if you apply by Dec 1st and get the scholarship app in AND you list engineering as your major… Luckily the app is super easy…no essays or teacher recs

So, total worth is over $90k.

Since you have an ACT 34, Bama would also likely give you an additional $4000 per year. This last part isn’t assured.

Auburn cut their scholarship to 2/3 tuition, so probably not affordable.

If financial is your criteria, it would appear that University of Alabama would be your answer. Both schools have a December 1st deadline. Bama states they need everything in which means your high school transcripts in the mail etc. I didn’t look up Auburn’s requirements other than the December 1st deadline. If you can get everything in for both, get them in the mail before Wednesday. Then, take time to decide which you truly want should they both be offered to you. Visit each campus if possible. The decision can come later. Bottom line: If the paperwork is not in yet, get it done.

Our rank 7 just got a full ride to both Bama and Auburn, so I’m assuming I’ve got a good chance at both?.

No…that person was a NM.

However,

At Auburn you would get 2/3 tuition. (this was full tuition last year).

At Bama, you would get full tuition plus $2500 per year. These are ASSURED if you apply by Dec 1st and get the scholarship app in.

At Bama you probably would also be given an additional $4000 (elite) scholarship.

At both schools you might get more offers. You need to apply to both schools since both have Dec 1st deadlines.

At Bama, you’d be a good candidate for their Crimson scholarship, which is a full ride.

Bama has the far better honors program (no comparison).

Auburn has traditionally been known as to have the stronger engineering, but since Bama has spent gazillions on new Engineering facilities and hired more eng’g faculty, I doubt Auburn is going to keep that status.

anyway…you need to apply to both…or at least Bama AND apply to Bama’s Computer-Based honors program. This way, you can visit both schools later and decide when there’s not a deadline soon approaching.

This person was not NM- maybe I need to do a little investigating to understand how she got her full ride.

Anyways, thanks for the continuing advice mom2collegekids. I checked out the tours/videos you sent, Bama honors does look like an incredible program.

M2CK is an awesome help to students in this area and has a wealth of knowledge. I would encourage applying to both if you can swing it. There are departmental scholarships that can really add up and may cover the 1/3 of tuition not currently included at the Auburn Presidential scholarship level.

The ultimate goal would be to have good enough merit packages from each university that you could visit, meet with department heads, tour the university, fact-find, and base your decision on how you feel about the university as a whole. Some students feel at home the moment they walk on one campus or the other. For some it comes from how they feel after meeting with professors and talking to current students. Any number of factors could simply tip you one way or the other. They are both very, very good schools.

As stated by others, you have to apply by 12/1 to get full consideration for merit monies however. The Alabama’s app is a bit quicker, however the Auburn app shouldn’t take too much if you already have teacher recs requested for other schools. If you want to try to swing the Auburn app, I would call admissions and ask them if how to have your GC, transcript, teacher recs, submitted the quickest, and if you still have time.
