Hi everyone,

just wondering does anyone know how long is the audition in general?

My son has done 1 and it was 10 minutes almost exactly.

It varies from school to school. Ten minutes is on the short end, they rarely go above thirty minutes and fifteen to twenty minutes is probably about average. That does not include any music theory, sight singing, music history or any other placement tests that may or may not be part of the audition process at some schools.

They say that when you audition they know if it's yes or no in the first 15 seconds, the rest is just being polite.

There's a number of auditions which are only 10-15, if I remember correctly.

Most of my son's cello auditions were in the 15-20 min. range.

My Indiana audition two years ago was ten minutes. My Rice audition lasted an hour and a half, including an interview.

My D has been wondering this bc she has her Eastman audition tomorrow and in the actual audition for her instrument the suggested repertoire is a full length concerto, a movement from a standard recital repertory, scales, 3 etudes, and 3-5 orchestral excerpts. Her concerto alone is about 8 minutes in length.

Most of DS's auditions were in the 20 minute range (give our take). But he had one undergrad and one grad audition each that were over an hour as they were more like a "lesson format". This is less common.

My first audition was about 20 minutes.

My second audition was about 15 minutes, and then right after that the professor asked to see me in her office where we talked for about half an hour.

Still have four to go . . .

S applying for violin performance:

U. Wisconsin - 10 minutes
U. Michigan - 8-10 minutes
Eastman - 10 minutes
