Hi everyone,

Our first trip to NYC and it will be for auditions. For those that have auditioned (or are planning to) for these schools, where did you stay? I am clueless. We will have a double bass and will need access to mini van type cabs.

Thanks so much,

Kay

Our son goes to MSM and we have been stayed at the following: Hotel Beacon (our favorite), Milburn Hotel and Lucerne. They are all located in the same general area around mid 70s and Broadway and there are always a lot of cabs available.

I’ve found some good deals on sites like hotels dot com (not sure if it is ok to link to a commercial site.) The other thread sited is an excellent resource, but I just had to book 5 days of hotel in NYC for my youngest daughter’s theater audition week and I was able to find a hotel for $860 including tax and service fees. It took me two hours of research, reading reviews, checking to make sure the rooms had 2 beds. And, to get this rate I had to prepay, which is always a bit scary. There were cheaper hotels, but the word “bedbug” in the reviews was a big disincentive.

We also stayed at the Beacon and really liked it. The rooms are big and have a kitchen. There is a wonderful grocery across the street and you can save some money and eat a bit healthier by getting produce, salads and pre-made meals there.

We stayed once at the Newton, which is a few blocks north from the Beacon. The room was small, but it was very clean and the hotel felt safe. I think we paid less than $125/night and booked from the hotel website.

Forgot to mention -the tripadvisor website is great for researching hotels. You can search by neighborhood, find hotels on a map and there are ratings and lots of reviews. The Beacon is rated pretty highly on tripadvisor.

To add to glassharmonica’s last comment, I would recommend checking this site as well.
(New York has had a bit of a problem in recent years.)

RunningtheBasses, wow thanks for that! I’m glad to see the hotel we booked (Affinia) is not on the registry!

This is a little different idea, right across the street from MSM is the International House, a residence for graduate students in various schools throughout the city. IH also rents rooms to individuals much like a hotel and their rates are quite reasonable. My son live at IH for his first year at Mannes and we have stayed there a number of times. It is convenient to the subway, close to restaurants and, if you drive to NYC, there is convenient street parking. (We actually never had a problem parking while there.)

I would second shennie’s suggestion regarding International House. We’re local and thus had no need to stay, but DS performed at a recital there during his tenure at Mannes and it is a very homey, clean, comfortable, and convenient place.

Oh, and glassharmonica, you are welcome for the link. Learned about it the hard way.

According to that web site, individual rooms at the International House are only available from May to July, which of course, excludes audition season. Does anyone know differently?

You all have peaked my curiosity. Basses on the subway, ok. How about on the bus?

Kay

I am trying to remember when we stayed at IH, but I think one time was during the school year. I would call and ask. They have rooms to rent for longer terms in the summer, but I believe their hotel type rooms are available year round.

Hi,

I bring my bass on the bus system in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area all the time without any problems. I also take the subway around here as well. Just keep your bass safe and it may be crowded so be careful to not take up too much space.
