audition portfolio

My son is applying for theater scholarships at several schools. The scholarships are for non-majors who are willing to devote a certain number of hours to the theater program. My question - he has to "audition" but his area of interest will be in on the technical side. In high school he has been the student director for five productions. How does he present this in an audition? Does he put together a portfolio? We have photos from all of the productions, would he include photos along with director's notes? Can anyone offer some advice or experience with this? Thanks in advance.

photos, production notes, programs, director's concept statements, reviews or outside assessments of his work on the production if available are all appropriate in a portfolio.
