audition songs/ monologues

I am hoping to apply as a transfer to NYU and Ithaca for entrance in Fall 2013. I’m thinking of performing “Spark of Creation” from Children of Eden and “The Beauty Is” from Light in the Piazza. Are these overdone or breaking any important rules? To be honest, I know someone who was accepted into NYU last year off “The Beauty Is”, so I’m not sure if I care if it breaks the rules…but I’d like to know.

If these don’t work, I’m considering:
“I Want to Go to Hollywood” - Grand Hotel
“The Other Side of the Tracks” - Little Me
“Wherever He Ain’t” - Mack and Mabel
“There Won’t be Trumpets” - Anyone Can Whistle
“Through the Mountain” - Floyd Collins
“Make the Man Love Me” - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
“In The Still of the Night” - Rosalie

“The Beauty Is” has a pretty difficult accompaniment, as do most of the selections from Light in the Piazza. I would suggest that you have an alternate song ready in case your pianist is not a good one.

I do know that “Wherever He Ain’t” is sometimes overdone, as is “There Won’t be Trumpets” (plus it’s Sondheim, so generally too hard for accompanists to sight read). The others seem fine to me, but others may have more input on those! break a leg!!

I think “The Beauty Is” is a great audition cut, but as people have stated- it’s tough to play. On the same note, Floyd Collins is also Guettel, and I would argue “Through the Mountain” is even more awkward to sight read than “Beauty”. Plus, I’ve attempted to find an audition cut for it before and nothing has felt succinct. I agree with the rest of the posts, however- you have some great options. Lots of mix and matching will show great range both vocally and with your acting chops. Kudos!
