Can anyone shed some light on the weight of the musical audition vs. the 1:1 interview? Is the focus heavier on the talent of the student vs. their ability to respond to a series of questions?

I don’t know what school you are referring to but in terms of music majors I can’t imagine anything more important that the audition.

Are you considering music education? The interview is important for that. Not so much music performance. As a matter of fact most of them did not interview DD. Just the audition. A few asked her some questions during the audition, but not anything she considered an interview.

The music ed interview is important, as it may weed out some unsure about music ed as a career, may help a marginally academic student (grades ARE important in music ed admits) show a real passion and dedication for teaching, detail some “teaching” experiences the student may have been involved with and similar themes, beyond what may or may not have been expounded on in a required essay.

A general or performance interview will have far less impact than an audition, and I doubt would be an admission killer if the audition/academic criteria had been met. Unless of course the applicant begins speaking in tongues. ;)
