I am auditioning at AADA and Circle in the Square, and I have a few monologues that I am considering. The one that I want to use for my dramatic piece is an UNBELIEVABLE monologue. I really love it and enjoy doing it. However, it's not from a play, it's just a singular monologue. I know some schools discourage students auditioning with a piece that isn't from a full play. I was just wondering what everyone thinks about if I should risk it (because this monologue is truly amazing) or just do something else?

I don’t know what the stated requirements are for either of those schools but if they say they want a monologue from a published play, as most colleges do, I would not deviate from that. Following the instructions for audition material is a wise decision.

It’s a constant frustration that there are all of these monologue books with terrific pieces, but that isn’t what the schools want. I’m not complaining, and I understand why they want pieces from plays, but the truth is there just isn’t that much out there. And even if one from a book is from a play, often you can’t find the play because it was never published. It’s just the way it is. Sometimes I wonder why they publish all of those monologue books when auditors don’t want them. I guess it’s for other purposes - I just feel bad because so many kids start with the books and then have to start over.
