AUSSIE student for EA? (Unsure of ACTs and ECs)

Hey there -

I'm an Australian citizen hopefully applying to Yale for 2011 entry. I'm debating whether to go EA (I don't plan on applying EA/ED anywhere else so might just for the heck of it).
I recently sat my ACTs and scored as follows:

Composite: 33
Reading: 36
English: 36
Science: 32
Maths: 27 (mainly because the curriculum taught in Australia does not cover a lot of the ACT content)
Essay: 11

Would you regard this as competitive enough for somewhere like Yale EA (or even for Yale RD)?

To contextualise other aspects of my application: -

Will graduate in the top 1% of my state (1st in several subjects at an extremely competitive girls' school)

State Champion/National finalist Model UN Security Council

National Finalist Moden UN General Assembly

Published article in the National Times on British/Australian politics

Work experience at a record label; have also been professionally hired to produce a music video for EMI Records (not out of connections or anything sneaky like that)

Have been to two summer camps in the US in 2008 and 2009 (one being at Yale)

Deputy Head Prefect

Varsity Soccer and Indoor Soccer

Volunteer hours (surf lifesaving)

Would you recommend I have a crack at EA or not bother? Also, in general, am I RD-competitive? (Being in Oz, I don't have a great idea of the other sorts of kids who apply!)

Cheers! :)

I think you’re competitive. What you should do is buy a Math study book for the ACT and see if you can take it again. The Math isn’t very complex, so you’ll probably have a pretty easy time learning it. There’s actually a decent sized difference between a 33 and a 35-36, so it could be worth it.

You may also want to take the SATs. If you’re not thinking about applying anywhere else early, definitely apply SCEA to Yale.

I agree about applying SCEA like MSauce advises. The only thing would be if you’d need your first semester Senior year grades to boost your GPA (assuming that it does). Otherwise, get it out of the way. Good luck to you.

Just out of curiosity, which girls’ school are you from?
The competitive girls’ schools in Australia are mostly in Sydney and Melbourne.

You have a decent chance, IMO :)

Ah brilliant that’s really nice to hear - and I’m from Sydney  Darned maths!
