Australian Unis anyone?

G'day --- does anyone here attend or considered attending an Australian Uni here?

Yes…

Yes! Which are of interest to you specifically?

How is Monash U?

Monash is freakin’ good! Go8 Uni. Wow!

But I am interested in universities that gives me good opportunities that help me utilize best the strengths of the diverse geography around the vast country — something few universities in the United States did offer.

Have you looked into University of Melbourne?

When you say ‘diverse geography’, what do you mean?

Individual universities are stronger in particular faculties - what are you looking at studying?

UMelb — Even better! Cool.

‘Diverse geography’ — from the coast to the deserts to the Blue Ridge Mountains, Australia has too much to offer in its diverse landscape! I am looking to study physical geography or geology. :)

Here’s some details related to The Education Program of the Research at ANU school of Earth Sciences: [ANU - Research School of Earth Sciences - EMS](http://ems.anu.edu.au/about/index.php). Australian National University is the best in Geology/physical geography in the country. Next would be University of Sydney, than University of Melbourne.

I’ve studied at Melbourne Uni, it’s a great university. You’re in the city, but it’s extremely easy to go to the beach or the mountains or skiing (if it’s that time of year) or farmland. However, the desert landscape you aren’t going to find much inside Victoria. Otherwise i reckon Victoria has one of the most diverse landscapes.

overall in ranking (if it means anything)
ANU always ranks 1st in Australia
University of Melbourne usually comes in second
and University of Sydney comes in a close third if not equal second.

As my brother is currently doing his honours year in Geophysics at USyd, and has a fair bit of interaction with people from other unis, I would rate USyd as best for geosciences - when I went to Geoscience Australia and had a chat to some of the guys there, they rated USyd higher, especially for research.

and IBAustralia - EMS deals with GEMS, Fenner deals with geography.

I would also take a look at UWA for environmental sciences. Note that geology is much more prominent in Australia than geography.

Geology? Wow… Thanks for enlightening me! So is ANU the best in Geology? :D

Australian National University is the best in Geology as well as University of Sydney. Melbourne is great as well. Though I would recommend University Sydney, as it’s in the state of New South Wales, which is diverse in landscape as well as culture.

K, this might sound bizarre, but my sister’s friend’s sister (haha), is attending med school in Australia (I don’t know what school), but apparently it is completely free for her to attend, as with the rest of her class mates (not because of scholarships or anything similar).

Anyone heard of anything like this?

do unis in australia give aid to internationals?

moneyp: there’s very limited financial aid for international students in Australia. There’re very few scholarships offered by Universities/Government, and they’re very competitive. Which Australian University(ies) do you have in mind?

IBAustralia: What are you basing your opinion on (regarding best Uni’s for geology)?

johndelaney: If you’re an Australian citizen (and I think also if you’re a PR) you can elect to go on HECS, where you don’t pay your uni fees until you start earning above around AUD$35K a year, then they start taking some money out to cover the fees. For med, however, some people are on rural bonded schemes, where they get paid, and have hecs covered, and the requirement is that they work in a rural area for a set period of time once they’re qualified. So maybe she was referring to HECS, or maybe she’s on a bonded place. I imagine there are more schemes like this, but these are the only two I can think of off the top of my head.

ibaustralia: looking at melbourne

Thanks for the posts.
