Auto Engineer

What engineering degree would you get if you wanted to pursue a career in the automobile world? With the energy crisis that will come shortly or has already arrived, I've been thinking about working with car companies on making either more efficient oil consuming vehicles or vehicles using alternative energy sources. Is there any degree that is emerging in any university that would pretty much combine the two? It seems like one would be mechanical while the other might be petroleum eng. with a little mech. Any help on this topic? I'm pretty new to engineering (freshman at UNC, but great at math and physics) Anyone else thinking about this?

I've been thinking about this also...I'm going to go with the mechanical engineering route with a small concetration on petroleum. I'll concentrate on petroleum incase I ever want to become a petroleum engineer.

Mechanical engineering is the typical road (pardon the pun) into automotive engineering.

Definately Mechanical Engineering.

Mechanical Engineering with either a concentration on Electrical or Chemical Engineering. Electrical deals with solar power (ChemE does a little) while ChemE focuses mainly on fuel efficiency. If you have petroleum Engin, then definetely go with that. However, I think petroleum Engin is not widely offered.
