I really think how much people have to pay depends largely on the market they are in. It seems to me to make sense that people in larger metro areas (such as New York, Chicago, LA, and other large cities) tend to charge more than do people in smaller areas of the country. It's a market-driven thing. My D has had three different voice teachers since middle school, and all of them charged the identical amount: $30 for a half hour, or $60 an hour for private lessons. We live in a large city. Each of the teachers was highly qualified and they did not know one another. Chelly is really fortunate: I don't know any teachers in our neck of the woods that would teach for $16 and hour. :)

I think that Chelly might have lucked out in Boston too... I know people who teach in Boston and many charge much more that $16 for 1/2 hour.

Just to get a range for average - my D pays $20/half hour locally. This is organized via CCM's prepatory program and is the standard rate. She can use "work study" hours to cover the costs for it, so for this year we are paying 0. (She is in HS still but assists in dance classes). This is for a voice teacher, who works technique to a much greater degree than reportoire and does not coacj acting. SO when D starts auditioning we will liekly supplement this with someone to work on the acting parts.

One of the "top" local vocal coaches here charges $75/hour, he does technique and acting, so maybe in the end it is not that different a price.

Dear Kimoki, You need to search around like I did at a local college in your area or Community college far less expensive. I have an awesome Acting Professor who’s very experienced and she has done it all. She teaches now at a Community college in upstate NY and I decided to take Audition Technique for a little over $500 per semester and 3 hours a week. I took Voice the same price. You can find well educated Professors in theater who have also performed in their life time and pay so much less by going to a college. You can take a class non matriculated in Voice and Audition techniques search like I did and you will find what your looking for, I find it utterly ridiculous to pay private instructors a lot of money for a 1/2 hour class. Your daughter should know how to audition and when she gets that skill down pat then she can start auditioning in your area where there is theater if she is only 14 but continue with Voice at a college and an acting class 1 then just get out there and audition and never feel bad if you did not get a part because a director maybe looking for types, body shapes all kinds of things. Good luck.
@Bartcat7, this thread is from 2008! So @kimoki might not be on CC any longer, or at least not in the MT Forum, as her daughter will have graduated long ago!
My daughter takes voice for an extra hour per week with her college voice coach. $180 a month and she is awesome. Not in NY.
