I've been a lurker on this site for months already and finally decided to make an account. So I'm finishing up junior year and getting on that college application process. I look around these forums and see kids with amazing gpas, amazing SAT scores, and then to top it all off amazing EC, which make me think about how the managed the time for everything. Then I look at myself with probably average everything and mediocre EC and wonder about how I'm going to get to college...

For my ECs:
- 3 years Red Cross Club
- 1 year Rap Club (club just began this year)
- 4 years internship/work at my friends business doing her books/marketing/etc
- 4 years running a sports blog
- 2 years varsity bowling

My Stats:
- 91 average, my school doesn't do ranks but it is one of the prestigious public ones in NYC
- 700 on SAT World History, 720 on Math Level 1, I'm awaiting scores for Math Level 2 and US History
- 4 on AP World, awaiting APUSH and AP Spanish Lang
- 1870 on January SAT, but I'm planning to retake and get 2000+ hopefully
- I plan on going into an applied mathematics/accounting/finance/business major
- I didn't get into the AP Micro/Macro classes for senior year (horrible I know) but I will be taking AP Calc BC and AP Stat along with another year of Spanish (some elective), reg english, forensic science, and regular gov/econ
- Oh and I basically taught myself Spanish, can I add that on?

I'm looking at schools like NYU, Bing, Northeastern, BC, BU, Macaulay, Lehigh, etc. with a decent business program. Chance me? and any recommendations will be appreciated :)
As well is there anything I can do to make my application more interesting? I doubt my parents will be able to afford sending me into NYU on full tuition so I'm gonna need a really nice scholarship of some kind :(

really? Thanks, but when I compare myself to these other kids on the site who have like a huge laundry list of ECs, I just feel all depressed lol. I feel like the only EC of mines giving me any weight would probably be those 4 years interning/working at my friends business. Is that something that’ll set me apart from others or?

Red Cross and internships should give you a lot of weight, but I’m no expert. People from my school have gotten into UCLA and Berkeley with as much as what you have, although your SATs are kind of low.

Have the talk now with your parents about what they can afford. NYU will just gap you and, if they can’t afford it, it’s better not to fall in love with the school.

I think BC and NYU (Stern?) will be tougher. Better chances at BU, Northeastern and Bing. Not sure on the others. Fordham and Bentley (MA) might be worth a look also. Best of luck!

As for how much my parents can contribute, I would say it would be nothing more than $10k, probably a lot less. I’m really going to have to rely on a generous scholarship to go to college or a lot of financial aid.

After looking at some info, I think Bentley would be a nice choice, I’d have to look more into it though. I’m really considering going into Bing or Stony just so I could save money and actually afford it. My parents are kinda against the idea of me attending a SUNY but I don’t think there’s much of a chance for me at better schools lol

Oh and did forget to add on, I was published twice in freshman year in two separate poetry books, forgot the names though but I’m sure I can find out… will that help? haha

Actually, one of my friend’s sister goes to Northeastern. She had a $30k scholarship or something like that and she needed to keep her average at or above 3.0 but she blew it freshman year. Her grades were around a B+/A- and a slightly higher SAT score than mines. Gives me a little hope :'D

I’ve tried to do some of the things I’m really passionate about (sports blog/internship) but I feel that it’s weak compared to others who have amazing leadership positions and such and seeing that it’s already almost the end of junior year, I don’t think I have enough time to make an amazing impression with the college reps. :(

Thanks for the encouragement Shaggy007! But the thing is that I will be competing with all these people next year in getting into college. It’s kinda hard to compete with everyone on CC with only average CC stats.
