Average Scores/Chance?

What will bring down my chances? I'm planning a bit ahead and going to try to raise whatever is needed. Carnegie Mellon is my dream school! Also, I know the average ACT is 31 or 32, but what is the middle 50%? Why does the average SAT convert to a much lower ACT than the average ACT? Will my ACT score hold me back from Carnegie Mellon? Sorry for all the questions, and thanks in advance!

------------ Sorry in advance, this is a bit long. ------------
College: 8 classes(Botany, Computer Networking, Industrial Safety(ha), Introduction to Business, Criminal Justice, English Composition I, and College Algebra) and enrolled in 3 more(Psychology, English Composition II, and Oral Communications/Speech)
GPA: 4.0 UW / 4.7 W(homeschooled so ehhh)
ACT: Composite 31(Superscore 32) English 30 Reading 33 Math 33 Science 28(I just can't manage the science)

EC's:
Volunteering at the library(5 hours a week(total of 100))
Leader in church youth group(300+ hours)
Volunteering at the local food pantry(450+ hours)
Part time job as Little League umpire/scorekeeper for two years
Phi Theta Kappa(weekly meetings)
No more honos because they are sorta hard to find with homeschooling and the ones available are meaningless(eg Mu Eta Sigma)

I think my essays should be pretty good
My recommendations should be amazing(one from English Composition I teacher and the other from College Algebra teacher)

Uhhh thanks? That answers the average… not the middle 50%. Also, will my 31 hold me back/should it be my #1 priority? @kaukauna‌

Right, they give the 25/75 ranges for SAT only. As for the 31 score, to some extent it depends on the college you apply to. Might be tough for SCS, but more than enough for Dietrich. Is CMU your #1 choice? I think they really like demonstrated interest.

According to the Common Data Set '13-'14(found here: http://www.cmu.edu/ira/CDS/cds_1314.html</a>) the 25-75 percentile for ACT is 30-34.

Thanks, @kaukauna‌ . Yes, CMU is my first choice with some LACs after it. I’d be looking at either architecture, information science, or humanities. Would it hold me back from any of those? If so, which ones?

What good oppourtunities do I have to demonstrate interest besides essays?

Thanks in advance,
Reddr0p

ED any1? where

reddr0p: I guess the best way to demonstrate interest is applying ED. If you didn’t do ED1, consider ED2 if they have it(I’ve forgotten). After that, the best ways are to visit and to contact your regional rep, making sure to tell him/her that CMU is your first choice.

Your ACT is probably in there for Dietrich. Isn’t architecture portfolio based (it’s a school in the College of Fine Arts), in which case the ACT is not as important.

Best of luck to you. I hope you get in.
