Average to just-above-average athlete: Should I fill out recruitment forms?

Well sports are a sacrifice. That is not a question, it is just if track is that important for me to make it worth it. I’m not looking at Ivies or any top top schools. If I were to run track I’d probably try to run at Providence College or something.

what I jheard was the if you even have an INKLING that you might perhaps play college sports- any division- you need to do the NCAA forms

So no harm in trying

correct, cgm. Athletes must go through NCAA Clearinghouse: register with them, get a transcript request form, and submit to high school for release to NCAA. Costs a little bit $30? Coach can’t have you come visit until you’re in the system. Clearinghouse makes sure you aren’t a mismatch academically for the school recruiting you.

I thought only DI and DII athletes had to go through the Clearinghouse…not DIII? At least according to the NCAA website.

I have heard that if you think you might play in college, do the forms- because say you think you might do div 111 and a div 11 option comes up, without those forms in…welllll

I have to do that now even if I want to walk on to a team?

i heard that you didnt have to do it for D III, but what citygirl is saying is that if you dont have the forms and a D II option comes up your in trouble. so you should fill them out. and i would definately send the coach an email or something. it can’t hurt. and dont mention you dont think youll fit in. they want to see confidence. whats the worst that happens? you dont make the team. oh well. Im im in the same situation with baseball. i could play for D III or maybe D II but most of the schools im inteterested in are D I. but im sending the forms in anyway. and plus it might increase your chances of getting in. the athletic department owns a certain number of admissions each year. two years ago a kid in my school went to Duke with like a 2.6 GPA but an amazing basketball player. and he was there for baseketball thats it. so send them. it wont hurt.

Duke basketball is a lot different than track at any other school unless you are nationally ranked. I would probably be one of the better runners in my event at most of the schools I am looking at but that does not mean they’ll give me money.

Whoa whoa whoa about this whole Clearinghouse thing- Does anyone know what the deal is for sailing? I’m a recruit at an otherwise D3 school, but I haven’t heard anything about forms. We don’t do different divisions in sailing, so now I’m a bit confused.

Anyone know anything about this?

Sailing? That’s pretty cool. Can’t help you though because I have no idea either.

Yeah, I’m pretty stoked. Don’t know how much it’s going to help in admissions, though.

I’m guessing that I don’t have to do anything, though, or else the coach probably wouldn’t have called / he would have mentioned it.

NCAA.org lists all requirements regarding the clearinghouse and who needs to do what. The NCAA also has very helpful people staffing their phone lines and they are happy to personally answer any questions you have. The number is listed on the website.

Dank- college sports can be challenging, but can also enrich the college experience. At a D-3 school, training isn’t year round or like a full time job as it is for Div 1. Always worth a look if you are considering participating.

Thanks Bessie. Ya, I have heard that D1 is like a full time job on top of school.

I am going to apply to my schools D1s and D3s and depending on where I get accepted and how I do this upcoming track season I’ll make a decision. I am not worried so much to making the team, I rather worry about getting in first.

I’ve heard back from the coach at Pomona as well. I think he’s even more interested in having me join their track program than the WUSTL coach is :)

He initiated an email correspondence between me and one of his athletes. He’s also given me a better picture of the school, which was previously high on my list but for some reason or another receded into the background of my college applications thoughts.

Wow, in two days so much has changed :)

Which events do you compete in dank?

Happy Thanksgiving all!

^^ Great! Good luck with Pomona! It is a terrific college!

Hi lavaplatos. Glad to hear Pomona is responding favorably! One of my D’s friends is a sophomore there, and runs distance. PM me if you want to email another current student. He LOVES Pomona (it’s not cold :))

Mainly the 400m. I do other events too, but that is my “bread and butter”.
