Avoiding the Freshman 15?

I'm going to be a junior, actually, and transferring to an out-of-state university from a community college. I will be living on campus and will have a meal plan. How can I avoid gaining weight while away? My dorm suite has a kitchen, so I will be able to cook my own meals and the residence halls are 20 minutes walking distance from campus so I could walk back and forth. I'm scared to gain weight because I have always had problems with my weight (I'm maybe 15 pounds overweight). Any advice? I will be living in NYC so I will be doing a lot of walking and subway/bus riding.

Does the school you’re transferring to have a gym? That’s probably the best option if it does.

Don’t drink

Exercise .

Don’t walk, unless you plan on walking 4+ miles a day to burn enough calories to lose less than a pound a week. Start running/swimming, and eat right.

All my friends already in college have said don’t drink too much, especially beer. Also avoid fast food as much as possible! If your going to drink choose a soda with zero calories mixed with a clear liquor apparently… haha.

You don’t even need to exercise to stay healthy and maintain or even lose weight. Just eat healthy. Depending on your resources and wallet, that may or may not be difficult. And since you’re in NYC, not sure if you’ll have easy access to fresh food markets.

Don’t drink a lot, it’s just a bunch of empty calories, utilize your school’s gym facilities well if it has one, don’t eat fast food, drink lots of water and eat lots of fruits and vegetables as well as lean meats, and cook most of your own food.

Do not eat after 9 p.m., nothing fried, and mostly plants. Also, drink mostly water. If you drink coffee, avoid adding milk, and you will save yourself up to a few hundred calories depending on size.

If you want to drink, vodka and diet sprite is the way to go. Or shots. Vodka shots do the job in the most direct way possible.

Drink a lot of water.
Eat breakfast! It boosts your metabolism.
Instead of eating three big meals, eat three smaller meals and two snacks. Your metabolism can slow if you go long hours without eating. Even if it’s baby carrots, or an apple, eat something every three hours or so.
Don’t eat heavy dinners. Breakfast should have the most calories, and dinner should have the least, with lunch in between. The reason for this is that you will have less time to burn off a calorie heavy dinner.
If you drink coffee/tea, watch what you add. Too much milk/sugar/creamer/honey can add up to a lot.
The fact that you’ll be walking a lot is going to help. It isn’t heavy exercise, but it is exercise.
