I am aware that having awards/ honors is very important when applying to colleges, espicially prestigious colleges, but if I have some awards that are not related to my major, will it still help with admissions. For example, if i am an intended engineering major, will having some debate awards help me?
@LingoidLongoid I would say yes. Any awards you have won creates a full picture of your skill set. Can not hurt you to include them on your app.
Thanks for the reply!
I have a related question then, knowing that there are limited slots under the awards / honors section on the common app, if you had one slot left, and had to choose between a mediocre STEM award, and a pretty impressive non-STEM award, which would you put on if you’re a stem major?
I’d put the more impressive non-STEM award (assuming you have other more impressive STEM awards as well). You want to tell your whole story on the application and the fact that you have strengths in more than one area is a plus, not a minus.
@LingoidLongoid In addition, any awards or other relevant info can be put in the additional information section of the common app. The more important info should be placed in the main sections of the app.
