Awesome Cal Poly Videos! Get Excited!

Hello everyone:

Well, ED is over and RD is a month or so away at the earliest. So, why not have some fun? Here are some of the best videos that I’ve found on Cal Poly and the San Luis Obispo area:

The SLO Experiment – really cool video. I could watch it again and again:

I LOVE, love, love the SLO Experiment! Just like you, I could watch it over and over and I DO! Thanks for posting the videos.

Very nice videos. After showing my wife the experiment, she felt so good about Cal Poly we finally schedule a campus tour. Now we’re just waiting for word on acceptance for S1.

Glad you all liked it!

Those videos are all perspectives.

The city has a high rape percentage and in fact just recently a girl was almost by three guys.

The college also might increase fees once again at the college by $1,000.

The college also doesn’t do enough for commuter students.

The area does not have a mall. The nearest mall is in Santa Maria.

If you’re not living at home, then you will find housing is overpriced in this area.

You will also find the area is not ethnically diverse at all.

Yup. It is about perspective. Just like deciding where to live, go to school, pick a career. It’s nice that we all look at things a little differently. The world would be a little boring otherwise.

Thanks for posting Osaka! It has been a while since I saw that video. We were so impressed with SLO when taking our DD down there last year for school that we took the rest of our family to visit over spring break. It is a wonderful place to vacation. Great cycling, we went kayaking in Morro bay, hiking, beaches, missions, wineries…

I wish they had a LIKE button here! :)

They are great and SLO is great too!

How is the kayaking in Morro Bay. What size are the waves.

david 12345

how is not being ethnically diverse make an area bad?

that is a false notion that somehow by being an ethnically undiverse area equates to racism or boredom
los angeles is very ethnically diverse and having lived here my whole life the majority of it is a craphole and the local governments are horribly

btw im also hispanic so dont go there

I’ve wanted to respond to david12345 about his negative rant. So, now that Mike1213 has, I will too.

Regardless of what you may think SLO is a very low crime area. Statistically it is one of the safest college towns in America. That does not mean that tragedy or heinous crimes like rape do not happen – they do.

Tuition is going up. But just be glad you are not at a UC which may cost $40K a year soon. The school must respond to losing 40% of its budget from the state. $1,000 for a school like Cal Poly? I am not happy, but I am willing to pay as this school still delivers value, real solid value at a relatively low cost.

The school does not do enough for commuter students? What more do you want? Private lessons at home? Parking for an entire quarter at Cal Poly is significantly less than one month at UCLA! ($165 at SLO if I recall correctly for an entire quarter and $200 a month at UCLA).

No malls? Great! That is exactly the way we like it. You forgot to mention no fast food drive throughs either! Thank goodness!

Housing overpriced? Not really. My kid found an off campus room for $300. Its a dump, but what more do you want? College guys rarely need more than a dump anyway. Anything better than a dump puts your deposit at risk if you have any social life at all.

No ethnic diversity? Hey, you are talking about US! My kid is mixed race, multilingual and dating a girl from another race and culture as well. My kid holds two passports and qualifies for a third. It is people like us that make SLO diverse. In fact, 35% of the students at Cal Poly are “minorities”. I wish I could have grown up in a neighborhood or attended a school where I could have been accepted more

To Mike and OsakaDad,

No comment on to your son living in a dump. I would not live in a dump, I would not live in dorms again, and I would not have room mates unless I knew the person for a while. I know some people who couldn’t afford to rent a nice place in SLO, so they are now renting in Atascadero and doing the commute.

What more do I want for commuter students? How about a bigger break on those parking permits for kids who have to spend money on gas. And don’t even bring up the UC schools. The CSU schools are meant to be affordable and able to help the local student. I know one college who has a lunch every month for commuter students to get to know other commuter students. Other colleges have more night classes for students who work in their local area at day, and go to classes at night. The farthest commuters I know are from Paso Robles and Orcutt. And I feel really sorry for those people. Luckily I only have to work over Summer, but if I had to work and commute to class that would drain me! I’ve tried and it sucks!

As for diversity, the Census does not include the students in the dorms or students who don’t register to live here. But the percent of Hispanics, Blacks, and Asians is still small here. Many Hispanics I know who have families who work in SLO can’t afford to live there, so they live in Five Cities or Santa Maria. And a little background on SLO, there is a consensus of people who supported Christine Mullohand who was on the city council for a while and her campaign always included “Keep SLO small and exclusive” and that says it all if you look at your paper trail.

“No malls? Great! That is exactly the way WE like it.”

Who exactly is WE? Over 60% of SLO County voters approved for a mall to be built in 2006, and thanks to poor timing and the powers at hand the land remains barren. The city even had a vote, and it was close to getting passed with 49% yes.

And the Los Osos Valley Road corridor just added retail development, and there are still more parcels of land zoned for retail to be built along that corridor. However, there are no malls planned, but just some large shopping centers.

The other thing people don’t realize about SLO is not all crime is reported to keep the image it has. There are only three communities in the area with a gang problem, and then SLO has a high rape and robbery rate.

There are good things about this area. But there is also bad. Cal Poly SLO does a good job giving financial aid to the students who ACTUALLY need it. And there are a lot of hiking trails. The high schools in the area are all relatively safe and offer a good quality education for California standards. You also have a good mix with city life and rural country life in the area and also beach life.

I also think the area has a strong spiritual presence with four large churches with over 1,000 attendees to church on Sunday mornings.

And there is also not a lot of gridlock on the freeways.

I have said my peace now so good day,

David

david12345 – Thank you for responding and thank you for giving us some facts behind your initial comments. You seem to be a real local and understand the politics of the area more than myself. Also, thanks for being more balanced and discussing some of the positives too.

Despite the issues of the area, I am still very grateful for the school and the opportunities that it is giving my kid every day. But, I get where you are coming from and change always comes from discontent. Have you thought of ways that you can make a difference? You seem like a smart kid – think about what you might do to change things. Ever thought of running for local office after graduation? This is not an empty challenge to you. You seem genuinely concerned about the state of things and I know young people under 30 who have run for local office and won.

By the way, your ideas regarding commuter support actually sound really good. Ever thought about bringing these up to the administration? I emailed Dr. Armstrong the other day and he got back to me in two days. I can tell you that he really listens – at least to me. He even invited us to meet him to talk.

With regards to my kid living in a dump. He looked at off campus housing and found a dump for $300. Possibly to live in next year. I may have misled you by not completing my thought. I, on the other hand, lived in a series of dumps in college and loved it. There was no way that I could destroy the place any worse than when I moved in and I preferred it that way. But that was when I was a destructive college student and didn’t care. Today, I do not live in a dump.

OsakaDad,

Thank you for listening to me. My job is done that you saw both sides.

I know people who run politics in SLO. The current politicians are good people.

Who knows where I will take my beliefs one day. I write articles in The Tribune sometimes. Unfortunately, some of my beliefs don’t get published. I suppose some of my articles might harm a couple businesses I don’t agree with. They recently opened a porn store in a nearby city, and I was very mad over this, and my letter did not get published. On the bright side of life though, they opened a pro-life center next to the abortion clinic in San Luis Obispo.

The proposed mall btw had voter support and should have gone through, but the developer should have gotten the land annexed into the city property. The county has less money than the city of SLO.

Cal Poly SLO has some good people in my opinion. Some people there are out to make cash, but not all. Some are there for the heart to give students a good education.

Take care,

David
