To Mike and OsakaDad,

No comment on to your son living in a dump. I would not live in a dump, I would not live in dorms again, and I would not have room mates unless I knew the person for a while. I know some people who couldn’t afford to rent a nice place in SLO, so they are now renting in Atascadero and doing the commute.

What more do I want for commuter students? How about a bigger break on those parking permits for kids who have to spend money on gas. And don’t even bring up the UC schools. The CSU schools are meant to be affordable and able to help the local student. I know one college who has a lunch every month for commuter students to get to know other commuter students. Other colleges have more night classes for students who work in their local area at day, and go to classes at night. The farthest commuters I know are from Paso Robles and Orcutt. And I feel really sorry for those people. Luckily I only have to work over Summer, but if I had to work and commute to class that would drain me! I’ve tried and it sucks!

As for diversity, the Census does not include the students in the dorms or students who don’t register to live here. But the percent of Hispanics, Blacks, and Asians is still small here. Many Hispanics I know who have families who work in SLO can’t afford to live there, so they live in Five Cities or Santa Maria. And a little background on SLO, there is a consensus of people who supported Christine Mullohand who was on the city council for a while and her campaign always included “Keep SLO small and exclusive” and that says it all if you look at your paper trail.

“No malls? Great! That is exactly the way WE like it.”

Who exactly is WE? Over 60% of SLO County voters approved for a mall to be built in 2006, and thanks to poor timing and the powers at hand the land remains barren. The city even had a vote, and it was close to getting passed with 49% yes.

And the Los Osos Valley Road corridor just added retail development, and there are still more parcels of land zoned for retail to be built along that corridor. However, there are no malls planned, but just some large shopping centers.

The other thing people don’t realize about SLO is not all crime is reported to keep the image it has. There are only three communities in the area with a gang problem, and then SLO has a high rape and robbery rate.

There are good things about this area. But there is also bad. Cal Poly SLO does a good job giving financial aid to the students who ACTUALLY need it. And there are a lot of hiking trails. The high schools in the area are all relatively safe and offer a good quality education for California standards. You also have a good mix with city life and rural country life in the area and also beach life.

I also think the area has a strong spiritual presence with four large churches with over 1,000 attendees to church on Sunday mornings.

And there is also not a lot of gridlock on the freeways.

I have said my peace now so good day,
