I’m suuuuper awkward and shy and it’s terrible because I just started up my club for school and I can barely look at people in the eye. But, I’m trying my best to work on my public speaking/leadership skills! Is there anything that helped you guys overcome shyness? (ex: HOBY, Debate team, etc?) I’m in Youth and Government right now and I’m also the president of my school club but they aren’t helping me that much they just prove how awkward I am in front of people! Sorry if this post is stupid I’m just really tired today and crazy
Don’t worry! I know how it feels. I was extremely shy and hesitant in middle school (I was so afraid of even speaking in class because I thought I would mess up or get the answer wrong). MUN (Model of United Nations) really brought me out of my shell in high school. I am not sure if you have it, but it is essentially a sort of debate club, but students role play as delegates of a specific country and take on that country’s point of view for a specific topic (like security situations). So, I would suggest debate team (don’t rush into it), because it does help with speaking skills (and it gets heated!). Also for being president of your club, do you have officers, like treasurer and secretary? Because those officers should be giving you support and helping you lead the club (maybe having others with you will make you less shy for the time being?)
The reason why most people are why is because they’re mostly conscious of others’ opinions. It can be hard, but just force yourself into uncomfortable positions and regret it afterwards. It brings your confidence level up. For your club, practice what you’ll say, plan out your meetings, and fake confidence, because I guarantee your fake confidence will turn into real confidence if you keep forcing yourself into that uncomfortable role Good luck!
@luvskat thank you!!
Poetry Out Loud is another thing you can do that doesn’t take as much time commitment as some things.
