since the film industry is regularly populated (and relatively flooded) with white, Jewish Males (not exactly sure if this is a mere generalization, though) would it be an "edge" to be a minority, i.e. Female or Underrepresented Ethnicity? Personally, I hail from a low-income, African American household and I am a female. We all understand job prospects are bleak right now, but I'd just like to make the best out of this career if I do decide to pursue it. However, I do understand to make it in such an industry one has to posses the drive, talent, and tenacity to truly succeed. I'm interested in all facets of the film industry, but particularly I'd like to be more involved in writing, editing, and possibly directing (though I no that would be far from now) big-budget Hollywood films. Anyone have any views or opinions?

Please and Thank You

I’m also a black female who is in love with filmmaking. And it is obvious as day that this industry is 99% white males.

But guess what. Who cares?

The color of your skin will only hold you back if you let it. Some people may discriminate, but that “drive, talent, and tenacity” will truly have you succeed. I enjoy writing and directing too. As in college admissions, all colleges are always looking for diversity. If you come prepared, educated, and talented, and a little bit different than the flood of kids who regularly apply, you can’t look anything but extraordinary.

PM is you want to talk :)

Studio 360 is a program that airs on our local NPR station. They did a segment on female directors a few days ago. It was not terribly encouraging on the state of women in the field. HOWEVER… just the fact that they devoted a lot of air time to the subject and interviewed and spoke about several prominent female directors was in and of itself encouraging to me. Here is the link in case you want to listen to the story:
