As to the auto insurance, we have State Farm and we dropped our son from our policy. He is covered at no cost when he is home but he has no car at KP.

After having been a State Farm customer for more than 30 years, I switched companies yesterday. My agent said that he contacted the underwriters numerous times about listing my son as a non-operator, with permission. The underwriters were adamant that they would not cover my son this way so that he could drive under my policy when home from the academy. Their hang-up was that my son still used my address as his permanent address or some such thing. They would not reduce or eliminate the premium for my son. A friend of mine who also lives in Texas told me something about State Farm of Texas being sued repeatedly as of late because of overcharging Texas customers to try to recoup their losses from the mold claims. I finally got tired of feeling like I was constantly being overcharged. It is interesting to note that someone on these forums from IL, and GA have both reported that State Farm listed their SA child in this way. Oh well…

Interesting, I am going to see my agent this afternoon to pick up a new atlas. I think I will print your response to show him.

Just talked to my agent and he says my son is covered while home. We had a fairly long conversation covering different scenarios and he seemed quite sure there wasn’t a problem. He did say laws vary from state to state.

A side note, they said USAA is very competitive with their rates, cheaper than State Farm.

We live in Texas and have our auto and homeowners insurance with Farmers. We also dropped our son from our policy.
We faxed a copy of his orders to our agent and the underwriters accepted it. Like others, he is covered at no cost when he is home but he has no car at KP.

Farmers was happy to get my auto and homeowners business and didn’t even need to see my son’s orders to write the new policy without him included. He doesn’t have a car at KP, but will be covered to drive my car when he is home on break.

We have GIECO and they have similar rules and policies as USAA. That said I believe when he comes back from Sea 2nd Class Year and takes his car up to KP from where we live (VA) it will still likely be cheaper for him to have it all in his name, I know a friend who handles lots of Motor Carrier claims (he’s an atty) and that’s what he recommends we do for personal liability reasons as well. That said for the next two years our son is a non-operator on our GEICO policy and my wife had a similarly long conversation with the agent as Oldairforce with a similar conclusion.

In our case - we got the USAA renters insurance after he left his computer on the AMtrak train so the next time it will more than pay for itself…
