B- Student Admissions

Son is 2 months in 11th grade. GPA at end of 10th grade was 3.0. He is really a B- student and will most likely get
a 20 on ACT, not expecting anything higher. No honors classes, no AP. Yes college prep courses however. We are out of state as well. Are University of Hartford, Hofstra University, Manhattenville College realistic choices ? Does test optional mean that GPAs need to be much higher or are schools looking at a lot of factors for determinining admission?

Well, one thing I am sure of is that a B student has plenty of options. Some students think that if they don’t get into the magical 3.6-4.0 UW range they are screwed. Most of these overachieving students are often competing for admission to the same 100 colleges and the schools that those kids will be applying in the areas you are mentioning would include NYU, Cornell, Columbia etc. I think you should have him take the ACT, and choose not to immediately send scores to school, instead use the first score as a building block to try and raise that score by 2 points composite, which is definitely attainable for most students with minimal preparation simply because the second time they are more familiar with the format. University of Hartford and Manhattenville college are extremely realistic. Hofstra would be a reach until he gets into at least 3.2 range. Manhattenville average sits at about 3.08 but those are inflated with some merit scholars who choose to go there for financial reason, therefore your son would be right at average. An ACT of 21 would put him in that middle 50% range. for Hartford, maybe aim for at least a 23 or if that isn’t attainable motivate him to raise GPA to at least 3.15 or higher. Hope this helps

I’m not sure why you mention you are “out of state” for these private schools. Residency is important for public schools like the SUNYs and UConn.

The other threads and comments from this username describe a learning disability? Is this really a parent or a student?

@DonnyZ123 Yes very helpful and very informative. It does help to put things into perspective.

@Oregon2016 July posts were my son’s. Original schools of interest were state schools outside of our own state.
