I'm a senior trying to find a college with two specific things I want.

Firstly, a stong B.A. acting program. The important things here are room for a minor, and possibly it would help to have no BFA, as I want the B.A. students not to be neglected. A BFA would work if there was room for a minor.

I'm also looking for a school with a stong Composition/Commercial Music/Songwriting Minor
(all names of similar program types.)

I'm pretty stong academically (2240, 3.92 gpa) , and want to go somewhere academically selective. Also, I want to be near in or near a city like NY, LA, Boston, Chicago ect.

I'm having trouble fitting these two needs together. And suggestioned would be appreciated. Thanks!

What first comes to mind is USC. They have such a combination and you appear to be in the ballpark academically as well and it is in LA.

Keep in mind, however, that it is possible to pursue songwriting/composition/commercial music even without a formal program, on the side if you are in theater. I’ll just say that my own kid, who majored in musical theater and drama (a BFA), is also a songwriter and composer in the contemporary music genre. She performs live gigs in clubs and is recording a CD of original songs. She also has had an original musical that has been performed and the style of the music is rock/pop/jazz, etc. If you have a natural talent in that area, you can pursue it without having an official minor in it. She has several friends who also did a BFA at her school in drama or musical theater (Tisch) who are also singer/songwriters who perform in NYC.

I’m not sure about the opportunities to minor in Composition, but you may want to look at the University of Texas at Austin. Austin is a great place for theatre and music!

Soozie from VT:
Good to connect with you again! Hope all is well with you and yours! Our s is also very engaged in songwriting and composing in Scotland after just graduated with a BA Acting degree from RSAMD. Just got his first paid acting job at the Tron Theatre in ‘Sea and Land and Sky’ in October. We are thrilled! The whole issue of creative license is new to us and copyright laws. Is it true that if you tape your music and mail it to yourself and keep sealed that that is proof of originality and ownership? Love to hear more…

frozenchosenak…hi nice to see you again. Congrats to your son.

I wish I could answer your question but I don’t know the answer to it, sorry.
