BA Theater With A Minor In Dance?

Would love to hear some thoughts on attending Millikin as a BA theater student with a minor in dance. Hoping for something “POSITIVE”! My daughter is a strong actress and an advanced dancer who loves to sing as well, just not as experienced in singing and dreams of dancing on broadway. The girl can really tap too! She is smart and getting nice academic scholarships here. She has some offers as a BFA dance major, but is as passionate about acting as dancing. We live in an area with NO musical theater colleges programs and Millikin was recommended to us by a summer MT program she attended, they said Millikin is great for an advanced dancer.

Hi…

My daughter auditioned for MT at Millikin last year and was offered BFA-Acting. My daughter is doing a minor in dance, because just loves dance! She is very happy that she isn’t in the MT program since she has much more flexibility in class selection and even though she has to pay for her voice teacher, she gets to make the selection rather than being assigned a voice teacher by the school. She loves the teachers there! It was a bit of a shock going from a larger city to a smaller, more rural setting, but she now has a car so she is able to “stretch her wings” a bit. Break a leg to your daughter!

Thanks so much for the sweet response TexBlondie! I really appreciate your feedback! It’s wonderful to hear that your daughter is happy at Millikin and loves to dance too! : D My daughter is very worried that she will not get enough dance as a BA theater student and we haven’t had a chance to visit the campus yet to talk to the teachers about this, all she knows is she was penciled into ballet 3. We hope to make a visit over our spring break. Does your daughter get to take plenty of dance classes going for a minor in dance? Does she tap too? My daughter has been in a pre-professional dance company for the past 3 years, favorite styles besides ballet are jazz, tap and contemporary. Since dance is something that she has going for her she does not what to chance losing her technique. She is also worried about fitting in her private voice lessons, which is the area she has not had as much time to work on, becoming a strong singer is a big goal of hers! She fears that not attending as a BFA student in MT she will not have the same ability to become a solid triple threat. She has quite an acting resume too, but the lack of vocal training seems to be an issue. She is a dancer/actress who sings well. After auditions it was clear that most of the MT kids were amazing vocalist first and foremost. My way of thinking is why go to college if you have nothing to work on…right??? Seams to be many pathways for these kids on how to get where they want to be. Would you mind sending me the name of your daughters voice teacher and her contact info. Since we do not know anything about any of them. ; D Thanks again TexBlondie!!!
