BA vs. BM at UNT

Anyone have information on the B.A. music program at UNT? We’ve been so focused on the BM programs that we haven’t received much information about the realities of the BA program. Do students in the BA program still get private lessons with the top professors? Or are you limited to grad students or adjuncts as professors?

Have you contacted UNT? Access to teachers and performance opportunities may be an issue for BA music majors in programs that have a BM program but there are exceptions so it is good to ask the school.

UNT’s BA in music requires audition for admission, and the site says lessons are with a “faculty member,” though that could include a doctoral student. The fact that auditions are required (many BA’s in music don’t) would seem to indicate access to faculty teachers and good performance opportunities, in the context of such a large program.

Hope someone with direct knowledge responds…

ps Here is a new BA in the school of music: BA, Critical Studies in Music and Society | BA in Critical Studies in Music and Society (unt.edu)

FWIW I am pretty sure that BM students get lessons with grad students at UNT. In some studios. Great school, though! Would you be willing to share the instrument/voice?

Tenor trombone. Classical.

My son is a choral music Ed major at UNT. He was accepted as a performance major and switched later. He says that at least for voice there is no rule about professors. What major you are may affect your ability to get the professor you want. The lessons for a BA student are 30 min and for music Ed and performance are 1 hour. His professor teaches BA, BM, BMEd and grad students. One of the BA students he knows (a soprano) is in the top choir at UNT.

My son also took lessons on a secondary instrument (cello) for his first two years. He had a grad student as his instructor. She was outstanding and he learned a ton.

You should direct this question to the trombone faculty at UNT. I’m sure they’ll be happy to answer your questions and help you make the right decision for you.
