Bachelor of Philosophy Degree

While attending a recent open house for honors students, we learned about the BPhil degree that the University Honors College can award--which we hadn't heard about before our visit. There's very little information about it on UHC's website, but hopefully people on CC know more. Has anyone considered or pursued it? It seems to be a fairly demanding undertaking (double or triple major required, independent undergraduate research culminating with a thesis to be defended before a commission, etc.) As such, is it a viable option for a premed given the already intense program of study? How early does a student have to apply for it? How competitive is it and is there a requirement regarding the ratio of regular vs. honors classes one has to take? I'm probably not even asking the right questions or at least overlooking something important... Thanks in advance.

I think that it is something a student might decide to do a year or so in. The honors college had a booklet that contained a collection of the research students had done who had chosen to go the BPhil route. You might call and ask them to send you one. If I remember correctly, it required a summer project at Pitt.

The Bphil is a research degree awarded upon the completion of a masters level research project/thesis in a field. It is usually started junior/senior year. Many people do a summer Breckenridge fellowship but that is by no means required. It also comes with a requirement of a rigorous course load, but i don’t think that is usually an issue.
