Backpack or Messenger Bag?!

Alright guys I have a quick question.

If you're a freshman to be like I am, are you bringing a backpack or messenger bag?

If you're not a freshman, which do you believe would be more beneficial for a kelley student or a student in general?

This is so random, I know. I guess this is what happens when you're bored at 1 am last night

A rolling file cabinet. Everyone has one.

But seriously, you don’t need a forum to help you decide what bag you want, if you like a messenger bag then get one, if you like a backpack then get one. There is no ‘oh my god you must have a backpack/messenger bag otherwise you are a social reject’ test. Part of college is growing up and learning to make your own choices–whether it’s a type of bag or it’s whether you’re going to study versus go out or what professor to take. Part of the college experience is making mistakes and learning from them. Maybe you buy that messenger bag and it breaks halfway through the year or it makes you walk with a funny lean, but you learned something. The sooner you take that to heart, the happier you’ll be

i mean i’m not asking because i really care what others will think, i’m just seeing which would be better or more convenient based on experience from former students. wouldn’t it be better to find out ahead of time or at least hear other people’s inputs?

From visiting, the most popular choice appears to be backpacks. I’ve carried a messenger bag all four year of HS, but I’m switching to a backpack because messenger bags killed my shoulders/back when I had multiple books/notebooks to carry (that I had to have for HW).

This is a reasonable question and OP should not be admonished for asking a question that they are wondering about. That IS the purpose of these forums after all. There are a lot of purchases to be made for a freshman year in college, I appreciate the OP was thinking about those purchases before purchasing something.

ao8capsIU: We have been having this discussion at our home too, so you are NOT the only one (and it doesn’t have anything to do about what looks good at our house either). I have read that the cross body style of a messenger bag can be harder on your back and shoulders, especially with a laptop in there. If you are going to be a riding a bike, many recommendations are to get the backpack. Originally leaned toward the messenger, but I think we may end up with the backpack the first year and see how that works. I can recommend North Face, our DD used hers for 7 years of school and hauling a huge amount of books/weight around.

Do not be afraid to ask those questions, they are all valid as long as it is important to you. Yeah…even at 1am (note my posting time).

Coste: thanks for your input! I also read somewhere that the m-bags hurt your back, and I also saw a lot of people with backpacks on campus as well

Mama: thanks for the kind words, I won’t be riding a bike but I think I will stick with the back pack based on everything said, the fact that I already have a good one, and I don’t know how many books I’ll actually have to carry around. If it turns out it’s not that many books, I’ll probably buy an m-bag to try out!

Thanks again for the inputs, go Hoosiers '17!

ao8capsIU…Backpack…laptop gets heavy really fast as you carry it around campus.

I can only imagine! Thanks for the input!
