Bad Freshmen year- need help. Do I still have a chance?

hey! this is my first time posting. My 9th grade year just finished up and i ended with a 3.3-3.4 unweighted. My classes this year are harder than the classes I will have next year. I am retaking a few classes ( need on opinion on this), but next year i hope to bump my GPA to high 3.7 or low 3.8. I took a practice SAT and did very well. Also I am on varsity tennis, robotics club, student action senate, JV golf, volunteer at red cross, also captain of chess club. Do I still have a chance?

bump

please need some help

You will be fine, as long as you continue improving. Keep in mind that colleges do recognize that with harder classes often comes a slight bruise in the GPA department. However, if by easier classes you mean a schedule consisting entirely of home ec, printmaking and gym, I’d reconsider the classes your taking. And assuming you score as well on the ACT/SAT as you did on your practice SAT, that will definitely work in your favor

All in all, I’d say with 95% certainty that you’ll be accepted if you improve as much as you expect to. And your extracirriculars will help, too - but don’t think that joining a ton of clubs and being semi-involved in all of them is better than really involving yourself in a two or three activities. They want to see that you’re pursuing your passions and staying dedicated to them, not spreading yourself too thin just to make yourself look better on applications.

If it helps, I ended my senior year with a 3.4 UW GPA at your typical, noncompetative public school and got accepted (with a $2,000 merit scholarship). Granted, I took a lot of AP classes and did really well ACT-wise, but just remember that GPA isn’t everything. Learning, and challanging yourself academically, should be your first priority, but as you learned this past year, sometimes we push ourselves a little too far. Know when to take a step back and realize that you’re not quite ready for something.

And you still have 2+ years before you even have to start thinking about applying to schools. Take it slow, and remember to apply to different schools (as much as I love OSU, it may not be your best fit)

Good luck!!
