For an unusual circumstance that I've had to face, is it frowned upon if i discuss my mother's schizophrenia? It's caused some friction within our family, for sure, and has affected my ability to study/practice/socialize. Is this an appropriate topic to write about? and how can i avoid making it a sob story?

I do not think any essay topic is bad. You just have to make sure it comes from your heart and shows the adcom how you stand out from the rest of the crowd. With a topic like yours, there is you have so much to talk about that you can write more than necessary. Just try to think about how this situation has made you a better person rather than complain about your situation or talk too much about the problem. Also, focus the essay on YOU! Colleges want to know about you, not your family. As long as you focus and write from your heart, your essay will turn out to be great.
